We took a RHD car to Spain some years ago. Due to ageing parents will need to spend a bit more time in the UK and are bringing the car back to reduce car hire costs - now also have a LHD Spanish car anyway. The RHD car was registered in Spain following a change of headlamps so to bring it back to Blighty and back to UK spec won't be difficult as we have the old headlamps.

Question is can we just whack the english plates back on, get it taxed and MOT'd and off we go or do we need to go through some process with VOSA/DVLA?

You will need to contact the DVLA and HMRC if you are importing a car into the UK.Ring,E-mail or find a form on the DVLA website and as it was originally registered in the UK in theory when the DVLA have sent you a V5 all you have to do is put on the original UK reg plate, tax the car,put the UK spec headlights back on and get the car MOTd.

Notifying the HMRC is mainly because if you import a new car from abroad you will have to pay VAT but you will be ok as if the car is over a year old it is classed as a used car and you do not have to pay VAT.If the car is over 10 years old there are some issues that it is best to speak to the DVLA.

We had a RHD car which took to France, changed headlights, got Controle Technique, and then though the hoops to export from Uk and Import to France, so much like your parents.

3 years later when we moved back to UK all we had to do was, swap headlights back, get MOT and then go to local DVLA office to export from France and import back to uk.

The funny thing was DVLA had no record of it actually being exported so gave us back the original number plate!

I believe DVLA policy now is use the original number if they have not been re-issued. The didn't do so earlier, which is why I bought a 1972 car with the "T" suffix. Since 1989 though, with help of the Glasgow local office, it wears the original plates, a "L" suffix.

DVLA never reissue numbers.

I would hazard a very good guess there will be a record of a vehicle being exported - therefore it would probably end up back with its original number.
