Just received a prosecution letter from DVLA for not having insurance however since the car has been in a garage for best part of 2 mths not sure why i would need it? Not received any parking fines or been stopped - really not sure how this has come about?

Prior to that the car was insured, taxed and roadworthy, since being at the garage i have let the insurance lapse as had no need for it.

Can't really afford the fine (1k + costs)?! not really sure what to do its been stressing me out over the w/e. Could anyone offer any advice it would be well appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

frown

Do you think it will be the maximum + costs? Are there ways to pay over the year or something?

Really could not have happened at a more inconvenient time.

Depending on the cars value it may be worth keeping it insured in case it gets stolen or damaged fire.

Is it still taxed?

Can't believe people don't know about CIE by now, but I did think you got reminders or a fixed penalty before prosecution.

Just did a online valuation and it came back to £1785 however it does look as if it needs alot of work. If the fine and costs were £1200 would it be worth letting them crush it? I could then buy another car with the £1200 in the new year.

I can......I don't remember seeing any TV adverts, don't read any daily papers etc......

I asked at work last week and 4 of the 5 people sat around me didn't know..........

I'm sure the publicity is there but I'm not sure how many it's got to.......

I'm pretty sure you still have to pay the fine.

It's not a hot topic because it's hardly something new. The enabling legislation was enacted nearly 10 years ago - http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2006/49/sectio...
Enforcement has been in place for nearly 5 years now - http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2011/20/memoran...

The RK should receive an advisory letter - http://www.biba.org.uk/pdffiles/cieleaflet2010.pdf - so there is no excuse for ignorance of this obligation.

It is extremely worrying that 80% of your work colleagues fall into that category. If it is a representative sample of the general population then imo an awful lot of people deserve to have their driving licences revoked.

Exactly, all that would save is the storage and release fees.

I think you've said it all. Nothing more for me to add.
