Incident involving Audi on M25/Leatherhead on Sat night
Discussion
Saturday night, about 12:45am+ - driving CW towards Leatherhead Jun 9 from Jun 8:
14 plate white Audi cruises past me about 65mph with a mark Police car following close behind, blues but no twos. Despite the flashing lights, the Audi wasn't pulling over.
I continue to stay behind.
Couple of miles up the road, second marked car, overtakes me at I would guess about 120+mph, then brakes suddenly to follow his colleague, and also turns on his lights.
Couple miles more, a third marked car tags on to the back of them also... all three flashing, all following the Audi, no-one's pulling over, no-one's speeding off, - apart from lots of pretty lights, this weird display/stand-off continues for another 5 miles or so until they all pull off, as do I, at Leatherhead Jun-9 slip road. Continuing down the slip road, just as the Audi is about to exit onto the roundabout, 2 marked Policecars spring from 'no-where' to block the Audi's path, then all the Police rush out over to the driver of the Audi.
Another couple of Policecars turn up seconds later from both directions, so we've now got a total of 7 cars in attendance. Sitting there, unable to move as the road was blocked, I couldn't quite see what then happened as the amount of flashing lights obscured my vision. 5 mins later, all cars were driven off.
Anyone know anything about this? Presumably it must have been a pretty dangerous person they were intercepting for them to wait until they did to stop him/her.
What I can't understand is why the Audi not pull over after seeing flashing lights? For about 8 miles!?? There is absolutely no way on earth he didn't not notice three Police cars behind him, all with lights on, directly behind him. fanned across the motorway so no-one could overtake. So why not pull over?
If the Police had no intention of pulling him over for another 8 miles, why put the blue (and red) lights on?

You can't predict with 100% accuracy how somebody will respond to an initial request from the police to stop.All else that follows is subject to the laws of physics - you can't instantly teleport more police cars to the location from miles away, they have to get there somehow.
Maybe they were waiting for the last two cars, the ones that sprang from "nowhere", to be in place? Or just giving him as long as you can to accept the inevitable, then hit the risky stop before getting off the relatively well controlled environment of the m'way.
Seems like a very sensible way of handling it.

Yes I get that, - but I cannot think of a reason why this Audi did not pull over?Seems like a very sensible way of handling it.
Any why have so many lights flashing, why not just follow? I can only presume that they wanted to keep the public away from this car.
Surrey Police tend to post on Twitter any interesting stops, but nothing of note from Saturday;

Back in the summer I witnessed a similar event, an unmarked Audi chasing a Bentley down the M23;

What color was the Audi? We have 2 14 plate A4's, might have been TPAC training, or could have been a genuine job. Not everyone who fails to stop, does so at maximum speed, some people just drive normally, they just don't want to stop for whatever reason.
You will usually wait for at least 3 cars, before trying any tactics.

Stolen, perhaps? Driver/occupants wanted for something else?Username888 said:

Because they were hoping he'd just accept the inevitable and pull over without them having to do a higher-risk stop.You will find various people of the track suit wearing persausion will take a hole saw and install a 3" diameter hole in the floor of their car, covered up with gaffa tape. If for any reason they wish to discard whatever they are carrying it can be done gradually through the floor hole rather than via the windows which would be seen on video from the following vehicles. Keep it up for a few miles and the vehicle is free of whatever contraband it might have had at the start of the journey.
In the US its known as a "felony hole", the excuse here is usually "I was gonna fit a neon innit guv"

Okay that sounds like more of a plausible possibility.In the US its known as a "felony hole", the excuse here is usually "I was gonna fit a neon innit guv"
I just presumed that the Police would have had more information on this guy, which was why they didn't force a stop, or at the least drive by the side of him and flag him down... rather than just sitting behind like lemons for 10 miles, being SOP.

He didn't stop because he didn't want to, unless we learn to read minds then we're just guessing. Given two cars were waiting then it's fair to assume that they knew he'd take the exit oils be a drug dealer, or a known scrote that they decided to stop based on intelligence or not.
Maybe the guy just wanted to be off the motorway before he stopped. Equally maybe the police wanted the same as they'd decided it was safer.

If you continue to drive normally and within the law, you commit the offense of failure to stop, but nothing further, so on an empty motorway you can go a fairly long way while you buy yourself some thinking time, but the police also have plenty of time to setup a a nice well planned stop further ahead, sounds like this is exactly what happened
