After trying one in Ikea, I bought a foam mattress.

They come tightly rolled and the info said to allow 72hrs before use - which I did.

However it's VERY firm, I'm getting backache and my wife can't sleep on it at all.

It's nothing like the one we tried in the store, which was much softer.

However Ikea's info says about giving it a month to get used to, it's been ten days and it's no better - I don't want back ache for a month.

Ikea also offer an exchange - but we bought the softest foam they sell, which is too hard !

Do I have any other options ?

Remind me what the L stands for ?

Legally what are my options ?

I searched before posting and most of the SOGA questions were posted here.

It isn't exactly faulty but equally it isn't the same.

What about returning it under the terms of Ikea's very generous returns policy: http://www.ikea.com/ms/en_GB/terms_and_conditions/...

Do you really need legal advice about that?

If you read the OP and read their terms - tell me what the flaw in your cunning plan is.

You may exchange your mattress once within 90 days if you don’t love it, provided that it is not dirty, marked or damaged. Simply take your mattress back to the IKEA store with your receipt and we will help you find one that suits you better.
I don't see the problem.

That's you'll end up with a <£200 Ikea gift card that I'm sure you'll never ever be able to find anything to spend it on?

The problem as explained in the OP is that we only want a foam mattress.

We have bought the softest they sell.

It is too hard - as they only sell firmer ones, how is exchanging it going to help ?

And what have Ikea said when you explain this to them ?

ETA : I'd guess that this applies since you tried one in the shop and the one supplied didn't match it : http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2015/15/sectio... , but I'd try talking to them before getting ready to quote legislation at them.

I have some experience in this area.

Despite my objections, my OH insisted on going cheap for our recent mattress purchase.

I didn't go for a roll up one but we spent £300 on an Ikea mattress around april last year. After about a month we noticed that it was sagging on my side (I weigh around 80kg) to the point that if you put your leg near the edge of the mattress it would slide out of the bed. Not good!

Went on their online chat and explained the situation and they said they would provide a replacement, delivered, old one removed, free of charge, no questions asked. Great I thought. 2 men came on a Saturday and took away the old one and left me with a brand new one.

Fast forward a few months and started noticing the same thing again. Not Good! This time I was convinced that there was some sort of design fault causing the issue so I didn't want a replacement. I went back to the store and looked at the most expensive mattress they had (£600) and decided that I wanted to go up from a medium to firm mattress to reduce the change of the side sagging. I phoned the number on my original receipt, explained the situation and said that I would be willing to pay the difference between the one I originally bought and the new one if they would take away the old one and bring me the more expensive one. They went for this, and delivered the more expensive one, taking away the old one again.

The new mattress is going OK, it isn't great but it certainly hasn't sagged the way the £300 one has, but at £600 I guess you get what you pay for. The mattress I had before the IKEA saga was around £1500 and lasted 10 years and was still comfortable when we got rid of it, which we only did for hygiene reasons and didn't want to take it with us on a house move.

In summary, they are pretty good with returns and customer service, it's a shame their mattresses doesn't compete with the more expensive ones out there which some of it's other products do very well.

Reading your OP, I'd suggest you take yours back and go to a different retailer. They do soften up after a little while though, too much in my case!

What was the firmness rating of the one you tried in store compared to the one that was delivered?

£300 on a mattress? No wonder it's uncomfortable. I bought a new one recently that was just over a grand, and that was in no way expensive.

Yep just been through the pain of buying a new mattress and top quality kingsize are £2k ( I was imagining howmany bargain barges I could buy for the price of a mattress!)

Are you sure you picked up the correct mattress?

When i bought a mattress a few months back the only thing that distinguished between the different firmness ratings was a small label with wavy lines on the side of the mattress. The pillows are labelled the same, i ended up with 2 different firmness ratings

As confirmed by rallycross £1000 on a mattress is mid range if you want something decent that's going to give proper support and last more than five minutes.

I've suffered from lower back pain for years. Bought a new mattress and could feel when I got up in the morning that my spine felt different and ached in a different way. Few weeks later and no more back pain.

It also has a gel tec layer which evens out the difference in body temperature between myself and the wife. I'm no longer really hot in bed whilst she was having to wear bed socks.

How about £16k for an emperor size mattress then? The standard double in that range is £8,500.

We only have a mattress from their "cheaper" range but even that was an eye watering amount.
