I was working from home yesterday (other half had taken the car off the drive so it looked like the house as empty)and I saw a chap in a Orange Jacket in my back garden. He claimed to be from Wessex Water looking for a water leak. He cleared off saying no problem with my supply before I could ask for ID. There was no van in the road so I checked this morning with Wessex Water and nope, they didn't have anybody working in my area. Reported today on 101 and am now reviewing my security setup.
Had one in my neighbour's garden a few years ago. I asked what he was there for. "Checking the drains for the council". "Then why are you wearing a jacket for City of Edinburgh Council when you're in East Lothian Council area?" At this point, his mate came out the shed carrying an old radiator. Fortunately my phone was in my pocket, so I rattled off a few pics of them (even one with the guy holding the radiator)- and their van outside complete with reg. Phoned police, who copied all the photos and radio'd in the reg of their van. 2 minutes later, they got a response to say it had been stopped in next village while nicking stuff off one of the fishing boats! And yes, the were from Romania!
Had a similar thing several years ago, came home to a chap in a hi-vis jacket nosing around my parent's house and looking through a window with cupped hands. I confronted said man who claimed he was from the council and was inspecting the building work that was going on, he apologized for not giving advance notice and speed walked off the property looking as suspicious as they come.
We called it in to the police and confirmed with the council that no one was due to visit the property - slept a little uneasy that night although nothing did come of it. Opportunist most likely!
