My girlfriend has had a £80 penalty (£40 if paid within a month) for failing to tax her car. It is a 2015 Toyota Aygo and the tax is £0 and for this reason she assumed she didn't need to do anything.

I am assuming she should have gone through the process even though there was nothing to pay, however she didn't do this and I was wondering if it is even worth disputing, or just suck it up and pay the penalty.

Cheers

The offence is keeping an unlicenced vehicle and by the sounds of it she is guilty, just like she would be guilty of an offence if she failed to notify the dvla of a change of address or various other paperwork offences you can be fined for

i'd say not even worth the fight. been the same for years on the old classic. many people thought the same when something is tax exempt they still had to display a valid disc, no different now.

Do we get reminders for MOT's? or should people who have driving licences and cars be responsible enough to sort out the necessary requirements on their own without gov intervention?

You still need to have VEL on a car even if it is valued at £0.

No you don't get reminded about MOT's centrally from an agency. Some garages send reminders, some don't. It's not that hard to put the renewal date in your phone.

WTF did she ignore the reminder? She has only herself to blame.
