Advice needed please... endless dealer trips
Discussion
Hi all,
I'm looking for some advice if you don't mind, as i'm currently banging my head against the wall.
I bought a 2014 Hyundai i40 tourer in 2014 . the car was a ex managers car with 2000 ish miles from the main dealer in Birmingham.
I bought the car to be used solely as a business vehicle for my job, travelling up and down the motorways to get to customers.
To cut along storey short the car is now at 38K miles and seems to making what feels like a regular trip to the dealers.
December 14 - wheel nuts continually coming loose
January 15 - 3 new parking sensors
March - 4 new front parking sensors
June - new steering wheel and gearstick due to it wearing through
October - new roof rails due to them popping off
October - new engine due to a cracked block causing excessive water consumption
November - Service flagged front discs / pads bellow minimum thickness ( on a 38K mile motorway mile car??)
Nov - gas struts on boot lid failed and boot fell on my head.
Dec - New discs and pads fitted at my cost £309
Dec - front parking sensors again failed, new units on order
Dec - Rear camera now failed - on a 2 week back order
I've tried my dealer but just get told its all common issues and that's why you have a 5 year warranty?
Since then I've been complaining on Hyundai uk's twitter page , which then follows in a direct message reply saying a customer service adviser will be in touch.
In 3 weeks 1 guy has called but has never got back to me , including yesterday where he absolutely would.
I'm sure its not just me who thinks the above is excessive. I really wish I had bought another mondeo which didn't need anything until around 82k.
So much for having a change.
Any ideas where / what I can do from here. The chap in Hyundai customer services said they wouldn't even consider taking the car back but feel like I shouldn't be having the issues above .

Without wishing to be too rude, you get what you pay for...
You can pretty much rule out getting a 'refund', if you did 40k miles of use would need to be taken into account.
If it was me, I'd either suck it up, push for a free service or two and plod on or sell it and get something else.
40k is about right for front pads btw, modern discs are chocolate on non premium cars so generally need changing every set of pads.

Of all the faults listed many don't stop the car working, so whilst annoying there not the end of the world:
January 15 - 3 new parking sensors
March - 4 new front parking sensors
June - new steering wheel and gearstick due to it wearing through
October - new roof rails due to them popping off
Nov - gas struts on boot lid failed and boot fell on my head.

The discs and pads doesn't really surprise me as it may be motorway driving but you still need to slow down at times and from speed which will cause wear.
I can see your frustration but I'm not really surprised given that its a Hyundai.
I ran a 2.7V6 Coupe as a company car for 3 years from 2005 till 2008 and it was reliable apart from a syncro issue on the gearbox at about 70K, it did however get through discs \ pads \ tyres pretty frequently, the stereo failed twice and the sunroof failed just before I handed it back. However it soldiered on till 137K when it was changed over without one actual breakdown.

My surprise here is that the chocolate gearbox isn't among your list of complaints.
They're good cars, the i40 Tourers. But you do have to accept that you only get a decent car for peanuts if they've scrimped on some other aspect. Yours does seem especially error-prone, so I'd say you just got lumbered with a lemon. As aforementioned, because of the gearbox I wouldn't recommend the i40 to a friend, but I wouldn't be too grumpy if one was delivered as a hire car for a few days or an airport trip.

Yeah I know what you mean but still at £20k I expected more. The mondeo it replaced was £21K from memory.
On paper it was a better buy , being less frequent servicing and a little better mpg. decent boot so I can drop the mountain bikes in or the exige wet wheel and tyres and not really care too much.
I will try and see what happens... The worst thing is that apart from all the above it drives nicely and returns a decent mpg which is all I need.
Like you say , I wouldn't have another.
