It might seem like a strange one but can any of our BIB here clarify if it's ok riding an ebike that assists you over 15.5 mph?

Looking to get one but pretty confused as some say having assistance over this speed makes it classed as a moped (so would need tax and registration etc) others say it's ok. I've also read that the police aren't interested and have never prosecuted anyone.

Is any of this true?

Thanks in advance smile

Thanks - yes I have seen that but it's the wording that confuses me. 'shouldn't' and 'must'. Do they mean different things?

Typical rather woolly guidance from the gov.uk web site. rolleyesP

The relevant legislation is - http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/1983/1168/regul... - Section 4(c)(ii)
as amended by - http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2015/24/regulat... - Section 2(4)(b).

The law says that the electric motor cannot propel the bike at more than 15.5mph.
I can't see anything to stop faster progress as long as it you doing it via the pedals. smile

That's pretty clear - thank you smile

Really disappointing as they're so frustrating to ride with the 15.5mph limiter frown

This may answer your questions in straight forward manner

I used various ebikes to get myself back into cycling after losing my leg and found them very useful.
