Being a compulsive shed shopper I recently helped a good friend buy an ’04 Audi A8 D3 3.7L V8 for £2800, FSH 120k, private seller. I didn’t see the car as it was the other end of the country but guided him on the phone with what to look for etc. He purchased it and the vehicle check done didn’t include a finance history check (I know, I know).… guess what, finance company have just called him and it has an outstanding debt on the vehicle.

The advert I found was on Autotrader, clearly the link is now dead. The seller obviously never mentioned the finance, the seller works in a legal practice (pic and bio of him on their company website etc) it all seems very odd.

We didn’t take any screen grabs of the advert when it was up so now can’t evidence he bought it off the ad description which at no point stated outstanding finance. If we had the advert it could I assume prove he was an innocent party and mis-sold the vehicle.

Any thoughts, advice, similar experience appreciated.

Thanks.

Get in touch with Autotrader with the car reg and ask for copies of the adverts.

I bought a car that failed badly, the nationwide warranty wasn't nationwide and i had to pay to get it taken back, trading standards took copies of the adverts, autotrader where more than happy to share them with me if I provided the reg.

Superb, that's exactly what I was hoping to hear. Thanks

He's bought it in good faith with clear title. The finance company need to go back to the person their agreement is with.

Yes indeed, but they want him to evidence that, hence the Autotrader ad angle...

Forgot to ask but pretty sure there was no receipt exchanged. Doing things remotely never ideal, details that are all second nature become fuzzy when not there in person.
