FFS. Set off a speed camera this morning at a GPS-indicated 52mph, in a 50. It was one of those small form-factor digital jobs, so, no question of it being out of film. Have they really clamped down to zero tolerance now? Happy Christmas to me rolleyes

Depends on the county, I think they can set them to what they like. Bedfordshire keep threatening to go zero tolerance at all times on stretches of the M1.

Doesn't necessarily mean that they will prosecute for that.

The cameras may be set to anything that's 50mph and over but they may prosecute at, I don't know, 54mph or more

It's on the 'Xmas parties to pay for' threshold.

They can flash below the limit, at the limit or above. It doesn't mean they'll prosecute. You'll have to wait a couple of weeks to find out.

You're stuffed from a Speed awareness course too..

https://www.askthe.police.uk/content/Q584.htm

You need to be doing at least 57 mph in a 50 to qualify..

I would be amazed of anything actually happened if you were doing 52 and it was a 50 limit.

I would be pretty confident you will hear nothing. If you do get a NIP though i'm sure there are a couple of people on here (possibly Loon - apologies if it wasn't you Loon) who have said they will cover the fine of someone actually done for under speed limit +10% if proof is provided.

I know I was definitely doing that speed, I had already slowed down, and afterwards I reconfirmed the GPS against the speedo (it reads between 52 & 53 at an indicated 55). So I'm confident I was doing no more than 52, probably slightly less, which is why I didn't bother braking for the camera (I was well aware of it being there, it's on my daily commute). I was also doing within 1 mph of the cars in front of me which weren't flashed. Very odd. I'm certain enough of my speed that I would challenge a ticket, provided that the ACPO guidelines are applied in that area (Met).

Now you are just being ridiculous
You honestly think any police force would decide to go with a lower threshold for prosecutions but not for a speed awareness courses ?

Very odd. You braked but not down to the limit? Why take the risk?

I'm looking for these mythical 1mph over the limit NIPs that people claim to have had. I'd be interested to see this NIP in the flesh too. Not that one will ever arrive and the OP will never update the thread.

You have a number of issues to sort out first.
  1. you will need to appoint an expert witness to attest to the GPS record
  2. you will need to work out how you will evidence the GPS speed as your evidence of what it is reading is neither independent or accurate
  3. how do you know that the GPS device was updating quickly enough to show your speed at the time you passed the camera as you say that you were slowing at the time of the incident
  4. is your device calibrated in any way
  5. does it keep a track log
  6. how will you attest to the authenticity of the track log
Good luck, you are going to need it because "my GPS said xx mph" is seldom good enough and sometimes even turn out to be a little iffy!

I'm not suggesting your belief is anything other than genuine; just explaining that you face a few hurdles in your intended challenge. I don't think the Met are operating at 52mph in a 50mph limit either but that is a matter for them of course. If you have set a camera off and it is not a test flash then it is likely that you may simply be mistaken in interpretaing the GPS indicated speed as you slowed down, less likely that there has been a camera error, most likely that it was a test flash if you were at 52mph.

None have been issued...unlike a 1933 penny just more rare.

So you were above the speed limit, but would try a challenge using that fact to say you weren't above the limit. Has logic departed for the Christmas period?

Tolerance has more than one meaning; in posting this reply I'll have used two meanings in this thread wink But your point is noted. Merry Christmas!

So your splat nav says 52mph what was the speed indicated on the car ?
I doubt anything will come of it but in future lift off the gas a bit earlier.

Might be worth checking what your car reads and compare it with nav on a clear camera free bit of road, however be aware that sometimes the latter needs to catch up and you may well be getting an early News Year sales gift in the post.
Don't you have any friends that live abroad smile

Did you really think I was serious?!

But it's a stupid thing for them to even have a minimum speed to qualify do maybe they take the view that at 52 mph they can't teach you anything so just raise funds..

As I said.. If it's all true and accurate, nothing will happen
