tax by dd for one month only -then cancel direct debit
Discussion
Normally put 330ci on SORN over winter months but as taxing car now appears to be reality easy online it would appear that I could tax car on say 1st Jan 2016 and pay by direct debit which I presume will be taken from bank shortly after 1st. If looks as if bad weather for Feb could I just sorn again on 31st January and cancel DD or is the 2nd DD taken to close to the end Jan/beginning of Feb so not enough time to cancel.
Anyone tried doing this?

I do this with a couple of cars.
Set up the direct debit to tax the car whenever you want through the month you want to use it. The direct debit normally goes through at the start of the following month (it probably depends on when during the month the car is taxed, but when you set up the direct debit, they will tell you when the first payment is taken).
Towards the end of the month, SORN the car again through the gov.uk website.
No need to cancel the direct debit, the payments will stop automatically.
When you SORN the vehicle make sure you get a confirmation email so that if the direct debit doesn't get cancelled, you have proof of the SORN, but I've never experienced any issues.

I'd be amazed if there aren't cockups galore if people start taxing and un taxing their cars when they feel like it
I taxed a car for a year at £110 , sold it after 6 weeks , got a refund of £33, no way to question it online so I had to write to them, a few weeks later I get a letter telling me I've been underpaid by £55, no s

I wonder how many don't notice their cockups
