My license photo expires on the 4th jan, I had the reminder form but completely forgot about it, Somebody has told me if i get my photo taken at the post office they send it digitally to the DVLA so its updated straight away, can anybody confirm if this if this is true? That way i still have time to get it done.

They do an express service at the Post Office (photo, validation and submission). Mine came back in 3 days. (I needed it for a holiday hire car)

Your chances of incurring a fine in the first month or two of lapse are exceptionally minimal, especially if it is in process.

Nope. They send it off to DVLA just like you would, so it takes up to three weeks. Google is your friend...

They will also validate that your form is completed correctly.

I had to do mine recently. It can be done with your passport photo now online.

Put in all your passport details, pay online, new card with the same photo as your passport arrives in a few days.

Suprisingly easy.

No they dont, you'll be alright if you get it sent off now.

I got mine through in a few days after using the Post Office, I think from memory the paperwork says you're fine to drive once you've completed the transaction at the P.O (They give you a receipt)

The cost is about the same as you'd pay just to use a normal photo booth

Has anyone told you that if they are in receipt of the renewal on the day of expiry then you can continue to drive without issue?

This applies to HGV entitlements (which expire every five years and needs a medical), so it will certainly apply to a standard licence.

Talk of being able to drive if the application has been sent/received etc. is irrelevant.

Expiry of the photocard licence does not effect the entitlement to drive. A car driving licence (unless subject to certain medical restrictions) allows the holder to drive until their 70th birthday. If someone fails to renew their photocard licence they commit the offence of failing to surrender the licence as per s.99 of the RTA, not the offence of driving otherwise in accordance with a licence as per s.87 of the RTA.

OP send your photocard licence away for renewal and continue to drive while awaiting its return, nothing bad will happen.

I think I took around 6 months to get round to renewing my photo licence; my wife was only around 3 months late. No automated fines or anything, so no need to panic.
