Insurance Question Re Flood Damage
Discussion
My wife is contacting the insurance company so I will find out fairly soon what their view on this is but hope to get an opinion whether the PH collective think I am screwed.
My car is insured with my driveway at home being the declared location where it is normally kept.
I am overseas working for a while and put the car in a storage unit rented by a friend of mine while I am away, thinking it would be safer there, anyway the unit was flooded to a depth of around 18-20 inches and the damage is currently being assessed by a local dealer. He picked the car up by trailer as he advised my wife it wouldn't be a good idea to turn on the ignition as the ECU was probably wet.
Will the fact that it was not being kept at the declared place nullify the insurance ?
To be clear I have no intention of misleading the insurance company by telling them anything other than the facts.

Just had my wife on the phone, the insurance company Priviledge have said they will pick the car up and have it repaired at one of their approved repair facilities.
Their website states
Our network of approved repairers gets 480,000 customers back on the road each year and consistently achieves high customer satisfaction ratings.
If you use our approved repair network, you won’t need to get an estimate for the repairs and we’ll allocate you a repairer straight away.
At the repairer, the damage to your car will be fully assessed, they will then contact us with an estimate of the cost of the repairs and once authorised, repair work will begin.
Each repair is carried out in accordance with recognised industry standards and all parts are guaranteed for 3 years and repairs are guaranteed for 5 years.
The line "If you use our approved repaired, you won't need to get an estimate" etc, implies to me that using their repairer is not compulsary. Is that correct ?

Yes - see page 14 here.http://www.privilege.com/content/dam/dlg/Privilege...
Note that if you choose your own garage you have to get the estimate approved by the insurer in advance, and the insurer won't guarantee the repairs - if the garage does a duff job it's purely between you and the garage. Some insurers also impose an additional excess if you use a non-approved garage, but I can't see a clause to that effect on a quick skim of the policy documents.

We used Privilages approved repairer on my parners 3 week old Mini, took 3 attempts to get it right (car park scrape)and over 3 weeks. If I need to use a repairer again I would take it back to Mini.Their website states

Thanks Guys
My wife spoke with someone else at Priviledge and he confirmed we don't have to use their approved repairer, apparently he was a pleasant chap and asked the name of the woman who had said we had to use their repairer.
The car has already been picked up by my local TVR specialist and the work will be done there.
