I've just bought myself a new car through a private sale checked v5 and vin number and all looked bang on to me, all history was with the vehicle including the sale pack and servicing etc, hpi checked and everything came back all clear.

One week of ownership later and I got a letter from Birmingham police saying that they've impounded my vehicle as it was being driven by somebody with no insurance and as its currently at my property in Scotland leads me to believe that one of these is clearly an imposter.

Does anyone have any experience of their car being cloned and did the situation ever get resolved? I'm praying that its not me whose got the clone but that's a position I'm just going to have to deal with tomorrow when the traffic police pay me a visit here, I'm not keen to miss wages and a trip down to Birmingham to sort this out.

Sounds like some scrote has had a set of plates made up same as yours.

I had a speeding nip come through for me, done by a static speed camera but at the time of the offence I was out of the country.

Checked photo of car taken by camera and while yes it was a Range Rover it was clearly not my one told the authorities and heard no more about it.

That's what I'm thinking the only thing that worries me is that surely the police when they impounded it would have noticed that it was a clone.

I doubt they will have done any checks in depth of the car

If its a straight forward just swap the plates, then they may have done checks. If however, its a proper clone, with VIN number etc, then it takes longer to do.
It would normally be checked by a vehicle examiner and depending on how busy they are, will depend how long it takes, so they may not have completed all the checks.

That fact everything has come to you as registered with the DVLA would make me believe the impounded car has a cloned set of plates.

You're looking at this the wrong way...

Pay the fine & the cost of the impound, collect the car, put it on a private plate reg & get new V5 with correct VIN nr for car, sell it & profit. You'd surely clear £10,000's on a Range Rover?

I know, I know, it's a stolen vehicle and it's a/immoral and b/ deserves to go back to the rightful owner never mind c/the OP would get knicked whereas the original scroat won't, but a man at the end of a stty week at work can dream can't he?

Given it's Range Rover, another way to look at it is you've got a complete parts bin on wheels biglaugh

They've impounded the clone in Birmingham (or the real car). The OP is hoping that his is the 'real' one.

Just tweet them a photo of your car on the road and ask for an explanation.

Not had this problem myselfbut had a friend who did. He bought an Isuzu Trooper somewhere in the North of England and took it back to Inverness, he had it for 2 to 3 years, I know i MOTd it at least twice and it was allways taxed when one night policearrived at his door and impounded it as apparently ther were 2 indetical Troopers with same reg number. After about 6 months the outcome was that they couldnt actually identify his vehicle but thought that the other was the genuine vehicle and his was handed over to the local fire brigade to cut up as practice for crash rescue.
