Parked on a double yellow at 06:00 this morning in an industrial area of Milton Keynes I'd never been to before - left my car there while I delivered another car to London.

It was raining and of course dark and tbh I thought I'd parked before the double yellow started but it turns out there's a big section of double yellows missing. see pic below. the line actually starts under my car so I guess I was ten feet on it, if it counts since half the line is missing

Is this something I can contest? I genuinely thought I was off the d/y line and a bit gutted to get a £70 fine reduced to £35 if I pay within 28 days.

Anyone any ideas?

Well taking into account the state of the lines, I think you have a chance of challenging it.

Just tell 'em:

No line, no sign . . . no fine!

Seriously, this photo and a short assertive narrative will sort this. It worked for me in similar circumstances in Leeds a few years ago. I even enclosed the ticket 'for cancellation' !

Although be prepared for them to say 'no' first time around! Rumour has it that this is normal strategy in some towns!

This is Money said:
All single and double yellow lines have to be continuous, unbroken and must end in a 'T-bar'. If there are breaks in the line, or the line does not end in a T-bar (except where the line is broken with other road markings), this can invalidate any ticket given anywhere on the line.

Here's a Google pic of the same piece of road and same missing lines from mid last year.
