Advice please.

My son is going travelling for 9 months, and wants his sister to have use of his car for that period. He will not be renewing his insurance on it for that period. Normally he would SORN it. Is it ok for my daughter to insure it even though she is not the owner.

It's OK if the insurer is happy with it - some don't like situations where the policyholder is not the owner and / or registered keeper.

You need to ring and ask.

As it's family they may not have a problem.

Could son add sister as named driver on his policy?

He does not want to pay for insurance whilst travelling

Yes fine, as long as the insurer is aware.

Could he add her to his policy and let her pay him for it ? (although this may be sailing a bit close to fronting since she'll be the main driver for the time he's away).

Two options. Sister finds an insurer that is happy for her to insure her brother's car. Or brother continues to insurer it telling his insurers that sister will be the main user. She can then pay his premium.

Both of those are elegant and practical solutions

I insured a car recently through the supermarket comparison website.Had a question about being registered keeper. I'm not and answered honestly. didn't seem to make any difference.

Some insurers don't like it - would probably have meant you didn't get a quote from them.

About 80% of all new cars are bought with using some kind of finance with the majority being lease and PCP in both these cases the driver is usually not the legal owner of the car and in the lease case also not the registered keeper and I am sure the insurance companies are happy to insure in this situation..Very similar with used cars as well with no issues.

Just change the Keeper on the V%. He can still be the legal owner if he likes. Then she can insure it without any issues at all. Simples.

I wouldn't worry about that at all - that's quite normal, really a completely different situation and not the kind of thing they are bothered about. With respect to insuring a car another person owns or is the registered keeper of (or lessee for that matter), some don't like it at all, some don't care if the other person is the spouse, some don't care at all.

But he will then lose part of a month's VED on the changeover, and the same when it changes back.
