So a NIP turns up today which claims an offence of 'Drive a vehicle when the registration mark fails to conform with regulations'. This allegation is supported by photographic and/or videographic evidence'

It was in November! But I've moved since then and didn't tell the DVLA until recently. So they've just caught up with me I guess. How do they prove the spacing in court from a picture??

I seem to recall a mobile speed camera sometime over the last few months, god knows if this was it or not, but thought I was fine as only doing about 25mph in a 30. Trouble is, it's that long ago, it could have been me, or it could have been the Mrs? Honestly haven't a clue, it was a weekend.

Ok, so the spacing is a little short between the number and letter on my number plate.........guilty.........not the biggest crime in the world. What am I looking at - Jail???

I don't really see how this is going to be "fun".
Decide who was driving at the time and fill in the request to ID. Otherwise go in front of a magistrate and attempt to convince them that two grown adults cannot work out who was driving at the time. When this fails, you'll be looking at a failure to furnish - 6 points.
If the plate is legal, go to an MOT station, get proof, plead not guilty and see them in court.
If the plate is illegal, £100 but as far as I remember it is non-endorsable, so no points.
The plate can be withdrawn, so if it's a "special plate" then you could end up losing it and an age appropriate plate issued instead - but unlikely for first offence.

I might be miles wide of the mark, but I'd suggest that a photo would be pretty good evidence to support their allegation. I bet I'm not miles wide though.

You'd have got a fine by post, if you'd kept your records up to date, or at least done a mail redirect which costs peanuts.

Seriously?

Anyway, it's not points - although any failure to respond to the original NIP might be - so it doesn't matter who was driving. RK is on the hook for both, plus the failure to notify DVLA of the change of address or ensure they could be contacted via that address.

If you had a normally spaced number plate then you wouldn't have received a fine.
You took the risk and lost.
Do yourself a favour and buy a decent number plate in the proper format with the proper spacing.
Guaranteed everyone who sees your car on the road and reads it mutters under their breath something along the lines of "tt" or "idiot" smile

Hey, guess what. Traffic police don't deal with stabbings and assaults - you know, different department.
Same way HR don't deal with the servers when they crash.

So when they see the stabbing on CCTV and they the offenders jump in a vehicle with a number plate that anpr systems can't interpret or is illegible, is it then still petty?

This is silly. The wife and I share the driving almost entirely at random. Pick a journey, any journey, from November last year and, unless it was somehow memorable or unusual, we'd have no clue who was driving. This is made doubly hard for the OP by the fact that he's not even had that 'was that a speed camera?' moment.

Also, if the OP has received a ticket but hasn't been stopped, he must have been caught by a camera. I thought the problem with funny spacing was that cameras couldn't read the plate. That's not the case here, so are we to believe that the police round his way really have that little to do? I'm all for coppers, I've no problem with the constabulary whatsoever. I'm grateful that there are men willing to do violence on my behalf, but could we, I these days of austerity and cuts to the bone, really not more usefully redeploy the time and effort spent on this? Is there really not a much greater public interest in the police being used effectively than there is in going after a bloke with his 'c' and his '8' a quarter of an inch too close together?

Or "Why's that mis-spaced like that? Is it meant to say something? What? I don't get it..."

He hasn't got to convince me he doesn't know who was driving, he has to convince 3 magistrates who will find it hard to believe that two adults cannot remember.
So you share all your driving all the time, if you get a ticket put on the request to ID "Don't know, it was one of us" and see how far that gets you - well it'll get the RK 6pts, but again - if you can convince the magistrates go for it.

The issue isn't that the plate couldn't be read- the issue is that the plate is illegal, all really simple really.
OP chanced it, decided to make his plate look "really cool" and got himself a £100 fine for the trouble.
As you said, it was a camera that got him - I suppose that camera could have been off arresting murderers & rapists, but it was just busy on the road that day giving people doing illegal things fines and where appropriate points *shrug* don't understand the issue.

I'm sick of this too. I was arrested yesterday for threatening a bloke and nicking his wallet. I mean, they must have better things to do like catching murderers and rapists and not bother with minor crime like my occasional muggings.
