Driving on the A3 (southbound) and noticed overhead (on the new overhead gantries that look digital) it was saying 60 - Que Ahead in an amber colour (with no flashing lights)

I reduced my speed to 60mph whilst everyone overtook me, does this mean the amber limits are an advisory?

If it isn't in a red circle it's advisory (& the A3 isn't a motorway but the A3(M) is).

I mean that you don't know the difference between an A road and a motorway.

You also don't know the difference between an advisory speed and a compulsory one.

Pretty basic road craft.

Now some will get upset that I've said what I have, but I do not find it comforting that someone who has a licence is unaware of such simple and basic elements of road use.

I think it was a comment on the OP, but he seems to lack basic forum craft.

Just so you know, I was travelling on the A3(M) which I am aware I probably should have made clearer in my first post, however I only asked a simple question...I'm pretty sure I'm not the only person out there who would have wondered this. I'm also pretty sure that you, at some point in your life, have asked someone a question which they would have thought was pretty basic information, but thanks for your response.

Don't take it personally. Its a mistake anyone can make - if they're not careful... smile

This is the internet. You are not meant to learn from it. You are only allowed to ask questions and then wait patiently for those taking the piss to get bored and go searching for another victim.

It's basic stuff, covered in the Highway Code and should be part of your test, at least you used to be tested on what road signs meant when I did my test 30 odd years ago. Whether you've just passed your test, or have been driving a long time, you should know this stuff.

He slowed to 60 when those far more clever drivers ignored the advisory signs, though. I'm perfectly comfortable with that.

The more important question is was there a queue? The ones on the M4 seem to always be cautioning of a queue ahead that never materialises biggrin

Quite possibly so. That's his choice, but he only did it to comply, as he thought it was compulsory, not through knowledge, or application if that knowledge. Will he slow down tomorrow, or exact revenge on those who dared to overtake him today smile

Well, I doubt he will be seeking any more knowledge on here and who can blame him?

Really, I'm one poster who has made one comment. I even referenced that some of you will get upset by my comment, which sure enough you did.

There is another thread running about speeding, where I've backed out as the discussion there has got pretty heated, yet nobody has got offended on that thread.

The good news is, I'll leave you to it.

I always wonder why people bother in those scenarios. *shrugs*

Thanks for your replies guys, I only posted on here as it is a) a car forum and b) I thought that people on here would be cool and not take the piss for asking a relatively normal question...I'm pretty sure that not everyone knows the answer...I slowed to 60mph because I took note of the sign and thought the queue wouldn't be too far away, I do apologise to the people who were on the road with me at the time for trying to be safe but hey ho!
