Driving to work this morning (I know, working Saturdays is 'a bit council') a cat ran into the road, and I almost ran it over. Had i hit it and owned up, would the owner be able to claim on my car insurance for vet bills/distress/loss of earnings/whiplash etc?

I think legally, you can just drive off if it's a cat.

If it was a dog, yes - just as they'd be liable for damage it did.

Cats are deemed not to be under the owner's control.

correct... the owner should be more responsible than having a pet thats allowed to wander freely in the local community - thats just my opinion anyway....

you would'nt have been able to eat it though, as thats poaching.

The car following would have been able to scrape the cat off the road and taken it home though as it would then be roadkill

Off a random Google page

"If you hit an animal that is not included in the Road Traffic Act, such as a cat or a fox, you are not legally required to report it but you may wish to contact the police to inform them of the incident anyway."

Hmm, I know you don't have to stop if you hit a cat, and I dont particularly like cats but I would feel guilty if I injured one.. My question really was that if this hypothetical scenario occurred and I could see the moggy was injured but not dead, I might stop and try to find the owner. If I did this could could they claim on my insurance?

And is there a big difference between that and a wild animal? Or do you think all animals are owned and controlled by humans?

At the Risk of a Whoosh... Cats IIRC are considered Semi-wild although they are a pet they have the right to roam much more wildly than dogs so because of this classification theyre the same as hitting a wild animal

No they couldn't.

Sensible pet owners will have their own insurance for this sort of occurrence.

And yes the nice thing to do would be to try and contact owner/call a vet if said cat is not dead. Many cats will be chipped so that the owner can be found.

Yes I own a cat and no he doesn't get to roam all over. But he is a cat and they do have a mind of their own (and they can be pretty stupid sometimes!).

A cat owner can't claim off the driver for injury to the cat, and the driver cannot claim off the cat owner for the damage to the car.

Sometimes, I find people selfish and ignorant in a manner that fills me with utter disgust.

If you injure any animal with your car, then you should stop and do your utmost to help and to alleviate its distress.

This would be the decent thing to do, no matter how unpleasant you may find it.

To those shameful individuals who think it's OK, because the law says it is, to drive on, remember this:

One day, you or a loved one just might be the injured animal lying in agony at the side of the road.....how do you think you'd feel to if the car just drove off, leaving you or your loved one to die a slow, withering death?

Think about this.

Hyperbole, much? You don't think you're stretching the point just slightly to move from a cat to a human, Jazzer....?

I certainly wouldn't deliberately set out to cause harm to a moggy in the road but equally I wouldn't feel any compunction to go out of my way to take it to a vet and incur expense myself if I couldn't readily establish who owned it. If you let your cat roam, that's your risk.

At the very least you should stick it in reverse and finish the job

Good grief, hand in your testicles would you please?

Cats are dicks anyway, the sooner they are removed from the face of the earth the sooner the internet will be free of stupid cat videos.

A few years ago, as I was driving along a quiet road, a cat bolted out from between two parked cars. There wasn't anything I could feasibly do but I tried to avoid it as best I could. Inevitably there was that horrible noise that you feel as much as you hear. I didn't stop to observe, so I don't know whether it died or not.
