We were meant to be flying to Bilbao last friday for the weekend but the snow at Manchester Airport caused some disruptions.

Our flight was meant to leave at 12.45pm.

The delay was extended throughout the day and during this time, flights from the same airline left, even though they were later flights than ours. Other airlines also resumed flights and some later ones were cancelled.

By 7.30pm we decided it wasn't worth going. We then received a text whilst in the airport telling us the flight had been delayed until the following day at 1.30pm.

I believe the flight actually got away at around 3.30pm.

The airline are currently refusing to give a refund for the tickets. Can they get away with that?

Yes it was easyjet.

Says it all........ Sleazy jet

You get what you pay for in life I'm afraid. Wouldn't fly with them if my life depended on it given all the stories you hear about them. Wouldn't surprise me if they do crop spraying on the way to the destination to make extra money!

The flight was delayed for reasons outside the airline's control.
When it did depart, you weren't on it - by choice.

Have you tried claiming from your travel insurance?

I had a 3 hour + delayed flight back from Madeira last year with Easyjet.

Followed the procedure and received my compo within a week.

Covered the whole cost of the return flight.

I had a 24 hour delay with BA last year, I down loaded a complaint letter and sent it, this was ignored second letter a month latter received an immediate reply and around 500 pound each compensation. My belief is that the first letter was ignored as a matter of Principe. All the info and legal references can be googled.

Surely it depends on whether it is something within the airline's control which causes the delay. Recently I have had overnight stays in Frankfurt and Amsterdam (paid for by the airline) due to flight delays of around 12 hrs, the Lufthansa flight was delayed because of lightning causing delays with knock on effects, I didn't even claim compensation as it was not in the airline's control.
The KLM flight was delayed due to technical problems, I claimed and got 600 Euros compensation.

As for OP's situation, your choice not to fly so no refund, however you could try claiming compensation for delayed flight, but if the problem was snow it probably won't fly.

All airlines will refuse compensation initially and maybe even the second time you write back. They know many claimants drop out. File an online complaint with CAA. You will get your money.

The op chose not to fly well after 3 hours, lost the flight but still able to claim the compo, which is more than the flight.

Forecasted snow does not cause delays. Poor infrastructure to deal with snow causes delays.

IIRC that the airport was blaming delays on the airlines and in particular the handling companies who did not have enough de-icing equipment.

Did you tell easyJet that, or did you just not turn up for the flight?

I thought with easyJet you could cancel with full refund after 5 hrs.

You should be able to get something.

I got $800 for having to switch flights on the way back from LA in 2014. We were told our plane (A380) had been removed from service and they were using a 747 instead hence the seat shortages.

Option 1 was $800 compensation to fly to Vancouver and then on to Heathrow. Option 2 stay overnight and $1300!

My mates ended up on the 747 as they wanted to get back (we all had work the following day) and I took the $800 to cover my excesses in Vegas laugh Only got back home about 4 hours after they did too! smile

In hindsight I wish I'd taken the 1300 and had an excuse not to go to work though!

You should be entitled to a refund.

Under Article 6 (1) (iii) of EU Regulation 261/2004 then, regardless of the reason for the delay, you're entitled to the assistance specified in Article 8 (1) (a).

That includes the *choice* between reimbursement within seven days, by the means provided for in Article 7(3), of the full cost of the ticket at the price at which it was bought, for the part or parts of the journey not made, and for the part or parts already made if the flight is no longer serving any purpose in relation to the passenger's original travel plan...

They are the only airline that does the route I need to my father's house in Italy and I have used them at least once a year for 14 years bar one year when we went to Florida.

And we have never ever had a problem with them. Not once.
I really don't mind them and I have stepped off business class flights (for work) one day and onto the easy jet the next day and really not had an issue.

That relates to compensation under Article 7. The OP was asking about a refund of the fare which, as another poster has stated, is covered by Article 8. Different things: see - http://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/?uri...

Travel insurance said they would refund flights, but that's not right when easyjet were the ones at fault.

After 4 emails stating they wouldn't refund the flight, I rang them today.

The 50 minute phone call resulted in me eventually getting a full refund.

This was after me refusing the following, with a period of 10 minutes on hold (being tortured by The Killers) between each offer.

1. No compensation due to extraordinary circumstances. I explained that I wanted a refund, not compensation.

2. No refund due to extraordinary circumstances. I quoted their own T and Cs

3. Offer of travel vouchers valid for 6 months.

4. Offer of refund minus admin fee.

5. Offer of full refund.
