Hi all!

Is there a regulation still to say speed camera vans must be visible within certain distances (depending on road speed limit) from the side of the road being enforced?

I think one might have clocked me, however the van was completely hidden by a hedge and they had a tripod camera (!!?!) on the pavement. I only saw the van when I was almost next to it.

There is sometimes one positioned on the Kintore slip road joining the A96 (heading towards Inverurie) that is impossible to see.

Catches plenty, sometimes at 3 figure speeds.

I learned the hard way. I never did see the van that caught me. Checking on Google street view, there was a "Police Only" layby on the opposite side of the road and sure enough a small white van with a small Camera logo on the front - High Vis markings on the back only.

Who me ?

Sadly now coming back into fashion, just as the fashion is to get bums on SAC seats to fund the "Empire".
Locally ( Warks), I've seen at least two bus shelters ( on the pavement, as usual) ,our lot love to hide behind, and one one occasion the "van", was a liveried Panda ,parked nose into the bus shelter, with the kit in the boot, and the lid up. On the old "Smile ,Camera site" ,Warks used to have a photo of the Camera Bike in action, with the liveried bike parked up ( in one of the purpose made police parking bays on the pavement) , with the operator crouched down behind the bike.

And you thought it was all about road safety ?

Driving home on the M4 last week I saw a police 5 series.
In plain view but the police offer was hidden behind the car using the roof to point his laser gun.

The only thing that needs to be obvious to the driver is the speed limit.

They are tax collectors, but the only people who have to pay are the ones that think speed limits don't apply to them. So in effect the tax is a tax on stupidity.

To aid visibility, they should all be on fire at all times.

Whilst that may be true and it is fair to say that if you break the limits you should be prepared to deal with the consequences, I pity the stupidity of anyone who believes that all speed limits are appropriately set.

I also find it incredulous that idiots keep feeling the need to make the point you make. We all know speeding is illegal. Pitmansboots used to do it all the time too, I think he did it to wind people up. He may have succeeded in agitating a few, most people just consider him a self righteous hejurt.

You are using 'incredulous' in the wrong sense there. What you meant was 'incredible'. When calling people idiots it's important to get these things right smile

Anyway, the point I was making (which escaped you) was not that speeding is illegal, but that it's only the people who do it that have to pay. And even then, only a small proportion of the time.

As for the setting of the limits themselves, that's a different discussion.

What gets my goat about these cameras is the lack of flexibility that could and sometimes would have been exercised by the Bib.

You speed, your filmed / pinged (whatever) and the Nip is on it's way. Shame we can't do the same with shoplifters, litter louts etc, etc.

They weren't hiding, just using the roof to steady the laser.

Are you calling yourself stupid, or are you saying you never ever speed? If so, I really do find that "Incredible". Certainly my daily driving would put you in the 1% who seem to abide by the law, with normally a long row of traffic behind them.

You are correct, however if they wanted to save childrens lives, they would be visible. But dead children don't matter to these camera scum.

You actually have a very valid point there, I've noticed that the safety camera volunteers and the vans hide round corners instead of in plain view, so speeding motorists continue to speed past dangerous junctions and round the corner before seeing them and slowing down, so yes money obviously does mean more to the safety camera partnership than children's lives. Shame on them.

As a footnote we've always known that it was always about the money and tax revenue, rather than saving innocent children's lives.

And being serious now, can anyone tell me how much I can legally charge the safety camera partnership/volunteers for parking up and/or placing unauthorised speed camera signs on my front garden. Can I legally seize their goods and place them in a secure and chargeable compound?

Years ago, when the rules changes, Derbyshire painted one dark green and one dark blue (unless the pictures were duff).

Is that why so many bikes were fitted with tiny number-plates?

Rumour has it that a LCD number-plate was being sold a few years ago that displayed black when ON, or any number-plate registration number you wished for at the touch of a button when powered OFF, needless to say plod went ballistic when they learned of the website selling these plates and had the UK website shut down.

In these instances google.com is your friend rather than google.co.uk wink

Edited to clarify ON / OFF options smile
