I have an old car with a cherished plate.

Just bought a new to me car. Pick up in a week or so.

What is easiest way to transfer plate from old car to new car ?

I would like to avoid putting it on retention then putting it on new car when I get the V5 which could take a while.

Don't really want to insure the new car on old plate then pay insurers fee to change plates.

Is there a quick and easy way ?

How long will I have to wait to get the V5 from my new car ?

Had my two cars 11 and 15 years so don't do this regularly.

Hope you can advise ?

You've got a computer & internet https://www.gov.uk/personalised-vehicle-registrati...
(I haven't used this service, but it's supposed to work)

1. Put it on retention. This is now done online and is instant - £80 instead of the old £105

2. Seller sends off old v5 - I got mine back off DVLA a week later. (Can take up to 4 weeks)

3. Transfer plate onto new car using your new v5 number - this is done online and is instant.

4. Inform insurance company - do it online if possible. I have 2 cars with personal plates and 2 separate insurance policies - both are free to update with new plates.

The £80 covers the retention and transfer.

Note, if either vehicle has EVER been untaxed you can't do it online.
