These seem to have appeared all the way up the M1 from Nottingham to Sheffield. Not painted yellow and seem to be in addition to the "smart motorway" speed cameras.

As I understand it the average speed cameras on the overhead gantries only get switched on at 85mph. But what about Haldecs? Are these the latest cash cow and switched on all the time?

If you want to post that 70mph is the limit for a reason blah blah blah then please don't bother. Carry on with your yoghurt knitting or whatever you people do.

HADECS (Highway Agency Digital Enforcement Camera System)

The overhead Gantry Cameras are not, I think average speed cameras and no-one has been able to get a definitive answer as to what they are set at.

They can be set at whatever the local constabulary wishes, although not at less than 10% +2. In practice, most motorways only have a few dotted around - they're not on every gantree. Personally, unless there's a reduced limit in force, I choose a speed I'm happy with, then slow down to 80 indicated when I pass a camera.

In Kent/Surrey, the only people I've heard of getting caught by these when the limits aren't reduced have been going over 90. Personally I'm not willing to push my luck that far directly under an active camera.
