Entirely theoretical because I can't find a 7 seater I actually want/can afford (plus I was involved in a head on collision as a child riding in the boot so I'm fully aware of the dangers.)

But for those rare occasions I need to transport more people what's the offence and penalty if I didn't have enough seats?

ETA having reread it I can see it could be construed that I was seriously considering it - I'm not.

Whatever the penalty it surely isn't worth putting people at risk that's just plain stoopid. If it's not regular get a bus, taxi or train it'll be cheaper than than the fines and increased insurance.

From a bit of Googling it's 3 point and usual fine. I found links to local press websites where 'Police crackdown on...' etc.

Not sure what code you'd have to declare to insurance companies but I'd have thought it would load a premium up as overloaded cars seems to be a 'crash for cash' tactic and they might hit you harder than an SP30. That's purely a guess...

O/T - I'm impressed with your post. For someone who has that many posts over that many months and you ask that question... I'll dust off the popcorn machine hehe

So the OP is fully aware of the dangers but still asks the question. Nobody should have children in a car, that are not in appropriate fully secured seat.

They're theoretical. (Well, mine aren't, but the scenario is...)

I'd thought I'd made it clear in my op that no popcorn would be necessary!?!1

We managed 15 in a Triumph Herald estate for the 2 mile trip to the pub when I was a student. Penalty back then was a cracked spring .

Why not just find a second car and driver for those rare occasions?

I remember people piling on and in a mk1 Fiesta going from a campsite to a pub. I declined the offer of being the third person standing on the back bumper and holding onto the roof rack...

Quick dash across a couple of fields as they slowly trundled on the winding road around them, and I was supping a pint before they made it into the car park.

My brother and me used to sometimes sit in the back of the family Austin Maxi back in the day. Waving to other drivers out the back window, it was a treat. smile

Daft thing is, I wouldn't even dream of letting mine sit in the back like that. How times change.

The offence is contrary to section 40A(c) RTA 1988. 3 points for your 1st offence. 6+ month ban for a second offence within 3 years.

When our family got too big for the Austin a35 back in the sixties (two parents, four kids, a dog and occasionally a Granny), my Dad bought a Morris van instead. We used to fight for the space next to the back door so we could stare out the windows.

I remember bouncing along in the boot space of my Dad's Morris 1000 Traveller after he had taken the rear doors off for repairs to the wood. Fortunately I survived to tell you about it - or did I...?

(Bloody stupid thing to do we both agreed afterwards.)

My Dad used to take my sister and me for a spin around the village in a trailer attached to the back of his Singer Vogue! We loved it, and lived to tell the tale.

Thanks. thumbup

Just reread my op and it does look like I'm seriously considering this: I'm not, it's just idle curiosity.

We used to get 2 adults, 3 kids and a dog in an MG Midget when I was a kid. hehe And probably stopped at the pub on the way home...

We use to get a whole under 10's football team in our old headmasters Renault 16 for away matches. And about 30 in/on a Land Rover 110/ trailer across the fields for the ride to the lake for a canoeing trip.

Different times but on our annual summer holiday getting to be in the boot of the Cavalier SRi with a duvet for the 500 mile drive was the coveted spot!

We often use to sit in the boot and wave at others.
Was great fun!

Just can't imagine it now though, would be gobsmacked if I saw it happening these days.
