V5 DVLA Tax/Retention error
Discussion
Im turning to the PH collective for some factual info about current DVLA situation. Decided to change vehicles and has been anything but smooth.
Short story: My "old" Car is on cherished plate, taxed via monthly direct debit for last 13 months. Go to retain cherished plate online, car not eligible, phone DVLA and told that this can happen but no problem, just send off the paperwork using old method. Subsequently find a new car, dealer is happy to wait for new V5 and we duly send off the old car V5, £80 and the retention application.
Fast forward 1 week and I receive a letter from DVLA apologising for a system error and that my old car DD was accidentally cancelled and as such is untaxed. I am told to setup new tax online immediately and that (in bold...) my car is untaxed. Two issues with this:
1)They have the V5 as it was sent to them for retention application
2) I am currently in Hong Kong and dont return until late next week.
What will happen to my number plate retention application? Will this be rejected now on the basis on non continuous tax? If so I assume I must wait for the V5 to be returned, tax the vehicle (again) and then send off the documents (again) with a further £80 cheque?
Ordinarily I would just call the DVLA but being abroad and with significant time zone differences this is a taller ordee than it may seem.
Any experiences appreciated!

Nor sure if will work for you, but maybe try declaring SORN on the car you are transferring from?
See Section C of the V317 Notes - https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploa...
As it is the DVLA which has screwed up it ought not to penalise you further financially.

Not that I had much in the way of replies to this but if it is ever searched by someone else I thought I'd post up the outcome.
DVLA destroyed the first cheque sent and explained that in the case of rejected applications they do not charge. Everything was basically sent back in an envelope with a hand printed label (that is to say - manually processed) with a short cover letter about continuous tax. The vehicle was subsequently taxed and a postal application was sent off again - last night I received the retention docs and everything through. Happy days, albeit it 2 weeks later.
