My neighbour's husband recently died and he'd already sold his car and put his personal plate on retention and had promised it to his son who has the same initials, but in the meantime he has died so my neighbour asked if I have any idea what will now happen to the Reg plate and can their son still use it on his car?

The lady said she wrote to the DVLA to ask about it but has not had a reply.

Thanks if anyone has an answer I can pass on.

The husband should have received a V778 from the DVLA.

On this form you can change the nominee (owner).

All here: https://www.gov.uk/personalised-vehicle-registrati...

If the form can't be located call get the woman to call the DVLA and explain the details. My mother 'forgot' to pay to retain a plate before she died and it was some 6 months overdue when she died and we were sorting all her paperwork. I called the DVLA, they were super helpful and I now have the plate on my car.

How recently did he die? The plate will probably have a value in terms of inheritance unless all that has been sorted already.

Thanks for your reply. As far as I know, they already had a form but had not filled it in as the son was to change his car, then in the meantime the owner died suddenly just over two months ago so I am just trying to help as the DVLA had not replied to the letter.

The bit above about changing the nominee is not correct for this situation. The son needs to become the new grantee because only the grantee has rights to the VRM. When my mother died I was in exactly the same position. In order for me to become the new grantee I needed to follow the process which is explained at the end of the link quoted above. The DVLA sent me a new V778 in my name (with Section 2 remaining blank).

I have just spoken to my neighbour who thanks you for replies that I printed them off for her, but she's confused (still raw from the loss of her husband so probably hard to think clearly) and she wonders if she has to make any changes to the grantee name through a solicitor or will the DVLA do this without there being a problem. She wrote to tell them of the death but has not had a reply.

Does this** affect changing the grantee's name? **The plate will probably have a value in terms of inheritance unless all that has been sorted already.
