Leaving the Police
Discussion
I wanted to make others aware of this thread I have just posted in the Employment section. I am after advice and views from other officers and employers who have any experience of the topic.
Thanks

Unfortunately most retired cops seem to be no more attractive to other employers than the rest of those in the job market. I retired 11yrs ago and took on a civvy job in my force - quite happy to do it - had no axe to grind with the job.
Many of those that I worked with over the years are also falling off the retirement ladder now. Those that dont need to work dont, those that do need to work are really scratching around for work at the moment.
The unit I work for (crime management) are taking temps on hand over fist at the at the moment. Most are ex or retired cops who didnt need to work, have got bored and have come back into a job they know on their terms - if they fancy a day off - they just dont come in but dont get paid.
The Sgt I work with retires shortly - hes not sure what hes going to do but has got on some agencies books through which hes hoping to get some work.
I'm not aware of anyone thats retired recently being given any preference because theyre ex-job - but good luck hunting if you feel leaving is the best path for you

Perhaps try working for insurers or investigative agents who supply services to insurers. You would have developed a skill set in interviewing people and in my previous work as a Defendant RTA insurer we used to have a lot of contact with retired or ex police officers who were doing this kind of work.
Greenish.
Funny you should mention Train Driving. 6 years after retiring from the force I got a job doing just that.
The Railways actually like ex service types, (I'm also ex Military), Police included, as they are used to working odd hours, being unsupervised and can follow procedures.
I worked for 3 different companies over the years and drove over a lot of the country.
As for the money, when I gave it up 3 years ago I was on £63K as an Driver instructor and that's for a 35 hour 4 day week. Not too bad I reckon.
Whatever you do, I wish you well.
