Insurance for the TVR was up on the 06/06/16. Got the renewal through from Mr fux.. FOUR HUNDRED AND WHAT BLOOMING QUID?
Gave them a call on the 3rd and got the price down to £200. Still a bit steep I though, but hay ho. Agreed it on the phone and ended the call with words from my fair telephony maiden to the effect of "Thanks, your insurance policy will continue with us from the 6th"
Role on to the 9th and whilst waiting for a meeting i spy an email from them stating "Our records show that you have decided not to renew your car insurance policy this year"
Ask MID confirms my TVR is no longer insured. Not really a problem for me, i never drive the thing and it had not left the garage. I had however taxed it at the start of the month. Fearing a fine from Mr DVLA for non continuous insurance on a taxed car... i rang up and begrudgingly got it sorted.
On the 10th, I did what I probably should have from the start and shopped around. Classic line insurance will do me a year of risk coverage (I am a risky guy) on my fibreglass mule for £170. With less excess. And from the phone calls i have had with them, a much better service.
me- On the blower to Mr Fux... Cancel please.
Them - That will be £25 admin
Me - No it wont
Them - Manager says we can wave the admin fee.
Me - Good
Them - Just the £45 to pay for the days insurance you have used.
Me -
So after a lot of pissing about they are cancelling the policy and refunding everything but the 40 odd quid.
What this thread is really about -
Policy documents state...
If your policy has already commenced, you will receive a full refund from us, less a pro rata charge for the period of cover provided. An administration charge which will be no less than £25 will also apply.
The pro rata charge for 4 days should be £2.19. not 40 something. £200 over 365 days is 54p a day times 4 days is £2.19. Right?
Properly pissed off with s
t insurance companys.

Properly pissed off with s
t insurance companys.they could I believe legally argue that pro-rata means you pay the insurance applicable to the time used
short time is more expensive - i.e. it is not a day rate - if you insure a car for one day you wouldn't expect to pay £2.10 so £40 might be the norm for one day of insurance... pro-rata = pay just for one day = one day cost = c. £40
I doubt you will get that changed

This is my understanding too. I'm not worried about the money, just the principle. After they messed me about so much i am a lot less inclined to give them free cash. I wonder how credit card protection works in this instance?

I guess, when it comes down to it. It is the wording of their own policy that matters. And as such, its a couple quid.
The bigger piss take came when i then had to email them to say i wanted to cancil the policy. If i had sold the car they would have canciled it ight away. But no, i have to send a buls
t email, to get an automated responce (That took hours to arrive) saing they will process the request in 36 hours.Surely the issue is not anything to do with pro-rata, more that you got an email from them saying you had not renewed. If they are telling you that you have not renewed...then they are fraudulently taking your money. It isn't as though this is trivial - if you are uninsured, that's 10 points, big fine and massive liability.
I binned these guys years ago, got very bored with the:
Them: "your renewal quote is £700"
Me "WTF, it was £250 last year"
Them "oh sorry, we pulled that figure out of our arses because we thought you were stupid, how about £400?"
Me "No, you haven't worked out that I'm reasonably smart yet, not good enough"
Them, "oh all right, manager special, are you in Mensa or something, would £250 do?"
Me "done".
....game.

They told me they would renew the policy. They didn't.
It was only a few days later, by chance i saw the default email stating my policy had lapsed.
Panicked and took the policy out with them quick time to mitigate the 10 points, fine and liability. As you correctly say.
I now want out, they are crap, the price is crap and the service is worse then the two points just mentioned. The 4 days i have been insured for is what they want to charge be 40 odd quid for.
Interestingly the girl on the phone said they would have covered me if i needed it during the 4 days I was not insured. I am not convinced in the translatability of such a "crime"
The main issue i have now is the time i am spending on the phone. Getting on for an hour at a time. Can i just reverse the payment on my credit card and let Mastercard fight it out for me?

Does is state in the Policy that pro rata is on a daily calculation basis? It could weekly, monthly or something else.
This all seems a lot of hassle to try to save £30 for the year, which you probably aren't if they are charging you £40 for a few days. Having renewed I would have waited until next yet to find a alternative.

Ah I see, the sequence of events is:
1) Attempt to continue policy with them, think you've succeeded
2) Get mail saying "you have no policy"
3) Kneejerk "I'll take out a policy with them to stay legal".
4) In the cold light of day realise you've been fleeced and attempt to cancel.
Honestly in this case, I would suck it up, and content yourself with explaining to anyone who will listen that they are an organisation to be avoided at any cost.
Note to anyone from from Adrian Flux reading this: you'll probably get to keep the £40 but this thread has probably cost you thousands already.

Indeed.I was thinking I might give them a try again after their previous terrible form (refusing to believe that a stock alarm from the factory was in fact, an alarm at all... etc...).
Won't now.
OP In the first year of insurance you might expect a % charge if you cancel mid-term, so say cancel after 1 month you pay 20%, 2 months 30% until about month 8 when you will be charged 100%, ie. no refund of premium. In the second or subsequent years insurances you can expect to be charged pro-rata for the time expired and an admin fee on top.
I would suggest in your case that Flux are paying the £2.20 or so to the insurer and pocketing the rest as an admin. fee but not an admin. fee if you catch my drift.
Sharp...
What's worse though is the fact they left you uninsured.

To add some balance I'm on my 2nd year term with Adrian Flux now.
Aside from the crappy issue with renewel prices (they quoted me £850 last year, 925 this year, ran quotes elsewhere and got it for 640 from Comparethemeerkat through Flux Direct) i've had no issues.
Indeed. I have used AF in the past with no issues. Never needed to claim through them though.Aside from the crappy issue with renewel prices (they quoted me £850 last year, 925 this year, ran quotes elsewhere and got it for 640 from Comparethemeerkat through Flux Direct) i've had no issues.

Correct. thre policy just says pro rata and a £25 admin fee.1) Attempt to continue policy with them, think you've succeeded

The legal definition is as folows...
Pro Rata Law & Legal Definition. Pro rata is a Latin term meaning "in proportion," referring to a share to be received or an amount to be paid based on the fractional portion of value, such as ownership, responsibility or time used.
So, in proportion. It should be divided by 365, to give a day rate. i guess.
