Just been issued ticket for going through a red light at road works - followed last car through and unmarked police car behind me ! The ticket shows the offence code for contravening red light but does not specify roadworks. There appears to be a specific code for road work lights. ANyone know if this is grounds for appeal ?

Thanks SS2 - thought it might be worth a try. Just thinking about relative impact on insurance!

am not denying the crime - just that to me it seems less serious in the circumstances than at a cross roads but I guess the law doesn't see it like that. c'est la vie!

I don't think you're alone in assuming that it might be a 'lesser' offence, to be fair. A surprising number of people seem to go through reds at roadworks and I'm sure most of them wouldn't at normal signal controlled junctions.

Selfish thing to do.

Seems to happen all the time though, the lights will go green on my side but there are still cars streaming through as they think that road work traffic lights don't mean anything.

red means stop.

If temporary traffic lights aren't correctly set up, it's quite possible that the cars have gone through their side on a green light.
I'm not saying that charging through a red doesn't happen though.

Happens all the time. The giveaway is when you see the light-jumpers glance back to see whether they've successfully beaten the lights or or not. Either way it's very rude and illegal.

Of course the other giveaway is you've used the lights both ways yourself and know damn well whether someone's jumped them!

I agree it's more selfish than dangerous assuming folks are following a line through rather than dashing through on their own.

There was a bloke on here a while ago who got away with roads works light jumping by investigating the permit situation. The responsible authority had not signed the permit at the correct time or some similar nonsense.

That'll purely be for internal statistics.

Either way, your licence will be branded with a TS10, 3pts, £100 FP, unless you get the choice of tea-and-biccies.

You don't "appeal". You simply turn down any offer of an FP or course, and opt for a court date. That's when you'd have the chance to stand up and say "Well, yes, I did do it, but I'm really hoping that some trivial irrelevance can spare me the indignity of having to suffer the consequences of my actions."

Let us know how that goes, please.

They're constantly digging up the main road where we live, about 15 sets of temporary lights in the last year.

They always go wrong! Stuck on red permanently, or green for both at same time, or all three lights lit at once, or the set of lights you're approaching has blown over in the wind but the other set are still standing... It's a bloody nuisance!
I've lost count of the number of times I sat at a red light for 10 minutes before accepting that it is broken AGAIN... And when you go back an hour later and it's red, you have to wait again because you don't know if they've fixed them or not! I've seen other drivers assume they're still broken, go through a red, and then they change to green a minute later.

Similar thing happened to me some years ago, I was caught by a motorcycle policeman. The following week I read in the local newspaper that the same policeman had a heart attack and died. Very sad but as a result I elected to attend Court knowing that the case would be dropped as they no longer had a witness.

There is a long-ish term set outside my office and they have put signs up saying that the lights are monitored by camera (for jumpers). Don't know whether that's true or just scaremongering, there's nothing obvious, but it's the first time I've seen such signs.

What an honest thing to do. What was the outcome?

So you knowingly went through a red light and admit on here to the offence yet just because a poor chap has died and no witness you want to waste thousands of our taxes to start court proceedings to get out of it. Bit selfish.

The case was dropped didn't even reach Court, it had to be as there was no witness.

I could have taken the hit but seriously what's the point? The guy died which was very sad, tragic but me admitting the offence would not bring him back.

I have no regrets over the matter.

There is two avenues to look at as local authority have to grant a road space booking and have the appropriate paperwork for these types of works.

They will also need a TTRO, Temporary Traffic Regulation Order and if thats not in place the lights should not have been there!
