Giving a number plate to someone else
Discussion
I'm sure the answer is out there and I'm just being dim/blind.....
I have a number on retention. It is in my name, my address and on retention (V778).
I would like to give it to someone else (a bit more complicated than that but that bit is irrelevant: simpler to say I just want to give it to someone else).
I can see how to change MY address. I can see how to add a Nominee's name. But I cannot see how I can remove me completely from it, and have it only in the other person's name and their address.
This bit of the DVLA website doesn't seem to answer the question:

As I say, I'm sure I'm missing something here as there must be a way to do it.

See section 4 in the link;
"If you do not want to become the Grantee, for example you are
giving the vehicle registration number as a gift, give the details
of who should be the Grantee in the box below. This means
that as the registered keeper, you will give up the right to
the vehicle registration number."

Are they having it put onto a vehicle or retention? the easiest way i have seen it done is just assign it onto the car of choice, ownership of said plate then transfers to the RK in my experience. i put my own plate on my last work vehicle, when removed it came back in the company name.

The problem with this is that the OP has the VRM on retention so he is already the Grantee."If you do not want to become the Grantee, for example you are

The V778 makes no provision for a Grantee to pass on that status to someone else.
What the Grantee has to do is make the recipient the Nominee. See Section A on the back of the V778.
This vehicle registration number can only be assigned to a vehicle that:
- is registered or about to be registered in Great Britain in your name or in the name of your Nominee. If you assign this vehicle registration number to your nominee's vehicle, entitlement to this vehicle registration number passes to them as they are the registered keeper.
Most people don't appreciate that the entitlement only passes when the VRM is assigned to a specific vehicle.
OP, for the avoidance of doubt contact the DVLA, Personalised Registrations section: 0300 123 0883.
Depends on whether he has a vehicle he wants to put it on straight away.
If so, you can do it for him online - https://www.gov.uk/personalised-vehicle-registrati...
Once that is done, and only then, he acquires the rights to it.
If he doesn't have a vehicle to assign it to yet you'll have add him as a nominee by post.
The V778 will come back to you because he has no rights to the VRM until it assigned to a vehicle of which he is the RK.
Therefore if you intend to give him the V778 you'll need to sign it in Section 1.
Leave it undated (for him to fill in later) and leave the VRM box blank.
All you need to know here.

I don't know how to make it any clearer.
As I said, it depends on whether his intention is to assign it straight away or not.
If the latter then yes, you will have to make a postal application to make him the nominee.
Subsequently giving him the V778 does not transfer to him any rights whatsoever to the VRM.
They remain with you, the Grantee, until it is assigned to a vehicle registered to him.
Until then, the DVLA will only recognise you as the legimate 'owner'* of the mark.
In this latter scenario any buyer has to trust the seller because they may be over paying money for which the rights have not transferred.
That is also the reason why, if you want to keep a cherished VRM, you [b]must[/i] put it on retention first (or transfer it to another vehicle of yours).
If you don't, as soon as DVLA records the change of RK the new owner obtains the rights to it.

Cheers. Handy to check as when I spoke to the DVLA they just said to fill in his name as the nominee, sign and it and post it to him, nothing about sending it to them first.
Fair enough: don't see why that wouldn't work. In my case I was making my son the nominee so that I could make a gift of the VRM to him in due course.
Hence I wanted the V778 with the 'Not Applicable ' box amended to come back to me.

If he were to provide the relevant info you could do it for him online.
