Parking space has changed from what is on my deeds - legal?
Discussion
The estate I live on has allocated parking for all residents. I have an undercroft parking space allocated to me, which is labelled with my house number and is also labelled on my deeds. It has been like since 2008, and I'm also charged a small premium by the management company to contribute towards the upkeep of the undercroft.
Over the last couple of weeks, we were notified by the builders (the licorice allsorts ones) that they were going to label our spaces much more prominently to help with enforcement (not by a parking company, i should add) - all residents were asked to sign off on plans to say that they knew where their spaces were. Mine matched my deeds, happy days.
Over the last week, the spaces have now been painted, and all of the undercroft spaces now have numbers that don't correspond to the homes. For example, I live at number 28, my space has been labelled 3 and the not-so-pleasant chap in number 3 has been using it all weekend - chaos ensuing across the estate in similar cases.
I've raised it with the management company who are looking into it, and can't fathom why this approach has happened, neither were they consulted on it, apparently.
Of course - i don't want to lose the undercroft space - i pay a small premium for it, the property as sold by the builders in the first place as having the undercroft space as an advantage, and it has other benefits such as protection from the elements, ease of access etc.
My question is - can what is allocated on my deeds actually be changed like this? I'm pretty sure the answer is no, but I'm wondering if legally it is fine as long as I have a space allocated to me (regardless of location). My deeds state that my space is the one marked on the map, and is for my exclusive use - doesn't seem to have any ambiguity about the provision of "a" space, anywhere.
All of this reminds me why i never ever want to live in accomodation like this ever again.

No. Of course it can't be changed if it's on your deeds, unless you do the changing (or at least agree to it).It would be like someone deciding that your house is no longer yours!

Has anything actually changed, except for the numbering scheme?Over the last couple of weeks, we were notified by the builders (the licorice allsorts ones) that they were going to label our spaces much more prominently to help with enforcement (not by a parking company, i should add) - all residents were asked to sign off on plans to say that they knew where their spaces were. Sounds like people are assuming space 3 goes with property 3, whereas the numbering is actually completely different - and space 3 goes with property 28. Bad planning on the part of whoever numbered, but that space is still your space.
Simple solution - the wuckfits who did the numbering come back and redo it.
Pretty much the case as above - the undercroft spaces were considered premium, as they were closer to the block. The less desirably placed apartments had official spaces allocated, but spread further from the block.
I'm not normally a complainer, but I let my management representative know who is aware of it, it does sound like there will be some days of confusion and someone has to foot the bill of redoing all the numbering, which at a few hundred is a lot!

Is there a 28 anywhere? If not, as above, I'd spray 28 onto your space and park there.
I'd also write to the management company and tell them if someone else is parking in your spot you will be charging them £100 per day for the use of your space. Watch how quickly they can rectify it then..

For what it's worth my wife's old flat had assigned parking spaces where the number in the space did not match up with the flat numbers. When asked, the management company said this was so that you couldn't tell whether someone was in by seeing if their car was parked in the relevant space (!). The estate was built like that however so everyone knew which number was theirs
Maybe they've tried to ham-fistedly implement something along those lines!

Absolute BS by the management company... does that mean I should park on my neighbour's drive and them mine or do we rotate?
Maybe they've tried to ham-fistedly implement something along those lines! Is it plot number rather than house number?
My last place I lived in flat 103, but had parking space 115
Just round the corner from my current house is a newly built row with two space in front of each house.
Houses are numbered 28, 29, 30. The spaces - so directly in front of each property they can't possibly be for anything else - are numbered 11, 11, 12, 12, 13, 13

They are plot numbers, but they all correspond to the house numbers.
So either get the management company to issue a letter to all residents explaining the situation or ask them to reapply the numbers corresponding to the house numbers. In the meantime tell your neighbour to stop being such an arse. foreright said:

We have to do this on modern developments where we need to achieve secured by design certification for that very reason.
Maybe they've tried to ham-fistedly implement something along those lines! You could speak to your constabulary police architectural liaison officer to see if they have been consulted.

If it was me and its on the deeds a can of spray paint , cover the 3 and paint 28 on the space and the wall.
There is actually method to the madness. It makes it harder for the organised thieves to target a specific flat to get the keys to a high value car that's in the corresponding space.OP - you just need to ask the management company to send a note round to everyone explaining this.
My flat is number 21. My car park space number 19.
It's like this to stop people knowing which flats own which spaces and to prevent car theft and burglaries.
Id wager this is what the new arrangement is at your place. - making sure everybody knew where their space was as the numbering was changing. Sounds like bad planning and communication though. So you live at x but your space is space 3. Id be telling your neighbour he knows where his space is and he should park in his and not yours. Id also be looking to get whoever painted the lines or the management company to send round a memo telling people the new numbers.

I've escalated the problem to the management company, and also the builders customer service line. At the moment:
a) The Management company weren't aware that the numbering was going to take place, they are investigating.
b) The builders (who did the numbering) initially insisted they were correct, but when I viewed a copy of the plan they used to do the painting, they actually used the same deed plan that I have, with the original numbering, but have crossed all the numbers out and written in the new numbers.
c) The builders customer service have now advised anyone who rings in to park in their original spaces, and signs went up last night to that effect.
d) The builders also no longer own the freehold - that was transferred over to a private company a few years ago. Apparently the freeholder wasn't told of the works.
So it's entirely possible that the original intent was to do the security numbering, but that certainly hasn't been communicated to residents in the letters that were sent out a couple of months ago. To make matters worse, the spaces were painted in the style of the plot numbers - i.e. I have X28 on my deeds, but the space is painted with X3.
