Equita Debt Collection
Discussion
Got home this evening to find a hand delivered letter addressed to a woman I do not know and knowing that I could not stick it in the post with not known at this address, I opened it.
It's from a debt collection company who came round today and will come back to take goods to pay a debt of around £500 originally from the highway agency.
There was a mobile number to ring but no one is answering.
Obviously I am not this person and I called the police who were no bloody help as usual. They just said it was up to me to prove that it is not I that owes the money.
I am bloody worried about this as on looking the name up it would appear that they hound innocents until they pay or go through the expense of getting a solicitor.
I will call my landlord and estate agent first thing tomorrow as I'm renting just to see what they can do. Maybe I have to move. I need to move my cars as apparently they can clamp or tow them.
Jeezuz, I came here to lick wounds of a failed marriage and now this. I am feking upset, angry and worried. I said to the police, how can this all be legal and they just shrugged their shoulders.
I have never been in debt and work bloody hard just to have a few nice things. Really feked off.
I realise no one will have an answer, just venting thanks.

When the guy comes back tomorrow show him you don't have boobies and a foo foo and you should be OK.
Seriously. Just show your tenancy agreement which will post date the debt - they have no reason to hound the wrong person it just costs them in time and effort to do so.

I'm presuming that the knuckle dragging mouth breather that they send, will just presume that I am connected to said woman and will ignore my pleas of innocence.
Also I have a feeling that being some sort of motoring fine, the lady has not sorted her registration so showing a date that I took over the property won't help. Just beggars belief that a company is allowed to act this way legally, especially as they are too moronic to be able to properly track someone down.

I've had this before on a house I had bought.
Previous occupants had run up debts in various names and just left. Had three different sets of debt collectors contact us. I told them that nobody by that name lives at the address, the date we moved in, and to check the land registry site and it would show the date of property sale. They all went away.
You'll just need to tell them you don't know the person, and they don't live there and show them your tenancy agreement. Give them the name of the landlord/letting agency if they want to check or follow up. That will help get them off your back as they know they can then try and find forwarding addresses etc via the landlord/letting agent.

You're panicking about nothing. I'm no fan of bailiffs and have had my share of dealings with them but contrary to popular belief they are generally reasonable people and if there has genuinely been a mistake they will leave you alone so long as you can provide proof. Rather than ringing the feds and your landlord you're first port of call in the morning should be to ring the bailiff and explain the situation. You will probably find that once the call is over that you'll no longer have any need to ring the feds or your landlord as the problem will be sorted. It's from a debt collection company who came round today and will come back to take goods to pay a debt of around £500 originally from the highway agency.

Just ring the mobile number, explain you don't know who this person is etc. They will come round and see your TA and leave you alone. Most of their admin staff can't do a proper trace search, so they give the collection agent every address they can find. Just be calm, they have no right of entry, your cars are safe as they are registered to you.

The police "won't be interested" because it is a civil matter, not a criminal matter. You shouldn't blame the police.Jeezuz, I came here to lick wounds of a failed marriage and now this. If someone from the debt collection agency calls, I suggest that you are civil to each other. Have your various bits of documentation to hand to show them, to demonstrate that you are not Miss XX and you are not in a joint tenancy agreement with Miss XX.
You may find that this all refers to a previous tenant of your property.
You might want to talk to them through an open window.

Wow, good luck dealing with them with that attitude. You've had one letter addressed to somebody else and from that you've deduced that they're knuckle dragging mouth breathing morons. Guess what? Tracking someone down often means writing a letter addressed to them at their last known address.

I called a couple of times to explain, but they didn't go away.
In the end I wrote a letter to them detailing the number of times that I'd called them and asking why they hadn't checked the land registry. I asserted that their continued pestering amounted to harassment. I informed them that each time they attempted to contact me, I would write back to re-confirm that I am not the person they are looking for, and since I've already given them this information, I would be charging for my time to correspond with them.
Lastly, I made it clear that should they illegally take possession of any of my goods I'd immediately replace the goods and sue for both the replacement cost and my wasted time.
The letter was sent recorded delivery and I've not heard anything since.

I have returned to sender the many letters addressed to this woman. In this case it was hand delivered and a good job I opened it rather than stick it in the recycling. Guess what? Tracking someone down often means writing a letter addressed to them at their last known address.
If only you had the most powerful information resource ever created at your fingertips. It may have saved an inappropriate call to the police...

It's not difficult and it's not scary. You're making a mountain out of a molehill and overplaying the victim card here
Ok Snorky, I agree. Lot of stuff going on in my life at the mo' so last night was the straw.
I called Equita today who wanted a copy of my council tax bill but said that there was nothing they could do to stop the bailiff and their advice to me was lock the doors and windows.
Errr! Great! It's pretty muggy today so a bit uncomfortable. Why can't they call off their dog?
The dog did call me as I had left a couple of texts on his phone and funnily enough he was a knuckle breathing mouth breather who didn't sound exactly friendly and informed me that until he heard from the company he was still entitled to come round.
Again great!
Within minutes of a call to my Landlord I had the contact details of the woman concerned. She was the partner of a tenant that vacated the property in 2013 and moved to Lucerne.
I presume she keeps a car in the UK still registered to this address.
Maybe I should become a debt collector. I might send an invoice followed by threatening letters to Equita.
I run a business and I have no time for people that cannot do their job properly or are just damned lazy.
How many frightened old ladies must just pay up out of shear worry even if they are innocent. Plenty of cases about Equita if you search.

I was with you, right up to the last paragraph, which wouldn't be out of place on Rip Off Britain or other tabloid sensationalist TV programmes. I called Equita today who wanted a copy of my council tax bill but said that there was nothing they could do to stop the bailiff and their advice to me was lock the doors and windows.

I think your landlord is in a bit of bother though, he shouldn't the giving out contact details that readily to you
