Folks,
I'm away at the moment. Sold my car via a friend about 6wks ago. Friend assured me he sent the v5 off but I'm not convinced as having checked my mail nothing's come through from DVLA.
Cars showing as taxed now (was SORN before). With this in mind do I need to worry/do anything additional? Don't fancy a Stasi fine for simple paperwork!

Doesn't the previous owner send off the V5 nowadays? If he's a close mate have a word, if a mate of a mate then notify the DVLA yourself using https://www.gov.uk/sold-bought-vehicle

Yes, it's the RK's responsibility not that of the buyer who should be given the V5C/2, unless it's a sale to a trader in which case it's the other way round and the RK sends off the completed yellow V5C/3. It has been this way for a long time now. The correct process is clearly described on the back of the second page of the registration document. It baffles me why some people can't get their head around it.Fireblade69 said:

Never trust someone else to notify no matter how well you know them because it will come back on you if anything goes pear shaped. The reason is irrelevant. The car being retaxed, and thus taken off SORN, proves nothing except that it has been retaxed. Not that the DVLA record has been updated with the new RK's details. If that has been done the OP should have received a notification confirming he is no longer responsible for the vehicle. When things have been done correctly, this should happen within 4 weeks, so the fact that he hasn't should ring alarm bells. He should check this with the DVLA asap.konark said:
If it hasn't showed up in 6 weeks you can apply for one yourself using form V62 (available at all good post offices) and the Green Slip.
Indeed you can, but that's not relevant for the OP. He doesn't want a new V5C. He's the seller of the vehicle not the buyer.steve-5snwi said:
If you have the number and their details just update it online between 8-6 mon to fri and 8-1 sat.
Yes - https://www.gov.uk/sold-bought-vehicle/y/no/sold-i...Sorry, didn't realise OP was seller , it was this sentence that confused me.
''Friend assured me he sent the v5 off but I'm not convinced as having checked my mail nothing's come through from DVLA.''
It's the seller that sends off the v5 and the buyer who waits for the new v5 to come through the letterbox.
