I'm a British national with a British licence living in Norway, been zapped by a laser trap tonight doing 86kmh in a 60 zone 50ish meters before the 60 changes to 80. The bd was hiding under a black blanket in the central reservation of the norwegian equivalent of a UK motorway. So the top and bottom of it I've lost my licence as they took it from me at the side of the road, they reckon 3 months. I'm devastated, never had points or a parking ticket but now I'm bannedoing....such an overreaction.

Can't you just order a new one from DVLA?

Think I would check with insurance company (and a local lawyer) before trying to drive with a "new" UK licence whilst banned in Norway. They seem to have a pretty low tolerance for speeding and I could imagine penalties for trying to evade justice are even harsher.

You may be confusing a physical licence with a driving ban. If he gets a new licence from DVLA then he is still banned in Norway and whichever country or countries have a reciprocal agreement with Norway.

No problem driving in UK during the ban.

I wouldn't entertain the idea of driving whilst banned here as after last night I guess the penalty would be extremely severe.

How does this affect me driving when I'm back in the UK? As we come back quite a lot and use hire cars.

Also when applying for a replacement on the government gateway website it ask's if I've been banned in the UK or any other countries, says that if I provide incorrect information I am liable for a fine of upto a thousand pounds, 2 years in prison or both, if I tick the yes box will it just decline my application for a new licence?

Do the Norwegian authorities keep your licence for the duration of the ban? Or send it back once the documentation is on the system? If so where will they send it?

Sorry to hear this. I've seen them near my apartment with a little box on a tripod hidden under a dark blanket partially in a doorway. The penalties for continuing to drive will be obscene, so I wouldn't risk it. The police in Norway are terrible, unless you are speeding or possibly evading tax.

The speed limits are so low that they've caused driving standards to plummet to terrible levels, but if they were raised now carnage would ensue. I fking hate driving in Norway. Low limits, drivers that are sleeping/texting/phoning/wandering off road/bouncing between white lines/random braking/never indicating/RoW from Right! and just generally switched off. Urgh.

Agree.

OP says he was doing 53mph in a 37mph. The amount over the limit is a medium cycling pace in relative terms. The result seems extremely disproportionate - but if that is the kind of punitive society you value and respect each to his own.

This outcome may also be some's definition of excellent road policing (or something that helps them pay the mortgage) but personally I think the policing time could be spent in far better ways.

I'd missed the 'living in Norway bit'

If he has a valid licence to drive in the UK can they ban him in Norway and how would the manage the process?

Although if I was living there long term I would take the medicine and conform. Which I would imagine will be very difficult it you live answer work outside metropolitan Oslo.

From what I can understand they'll send it back to me once the ban is up and will be sent to my address in Norway.

They said that because I was 25kph over the limit anything after this 25 means that I immediately lost my licence at the roadside, anything under and I would have just got a roadside fine. I admit I was speeding no problem, but the way in which it's been done and the punishment really doesn't fit the crime. This was a dual lane road, late at night with hardly any traffic on the road. Also the knobhead using the laser trap pretty much stepped out into the road causing me to swerve and absolutely st my pants just as I passed him to let me know I'd been zapped. I mentioned this to the officers in the car and they said he admitted to them over the radio he'd made a mistake in stepping out into the road.

Also I'm facing a fine of upto 10,000nok.

Spoken to the boss today and he's not happy as the ability to drive a van is pretty much needed, but after explaining he's quite sympathetic, probably going to have to cut down to part time until I get my licence back which is really going to fk things up to be honest.

I'm going to conform there's no question about that, I don't fancy making the situation worse. I'm in Bergen....around 15km from the city but we do a lot of work up in the mountains for people that have summer houses and winter cabins and that involves anything upto 120km each way. So it's going to be a bit difficult trying to fix work.

Are Norwegian roads safer because of this draconian policing?

Absolutely not, I'm not just saying this because of last nights event but the standard of driving here is terrible. I even made a thread about it in General Gassing.

People very seldom use indicators, use mobile phones whilst driving, drive too slow, pull out in front of oncoming traffic and fail to get going I could go on and one. I even brought this up with them last night and the excuse they used was that they can't be everywhere all the time......................Yet conveniently they can be a short distance before a speed limit change to catch people late at night.

Nope. Drivers just switch off and as long as they don't 'speed', all is well until they just fall off the road.
