Afternoon

I was driving back from London on Thursday night and was overtaken by about 4 undercover cars near reading. Lights flashing but only doing 85odd. Not the usual bmw estates, but included a Mazda a mini and a Peugeot. Then about half an hour later got overtaken by another four.

Seemed odd as they were a weird mix of cars and didn't seem to be in a hurry.

Some sort of training exercise perhaps?

In the city of London there used to be an unmarked white police van with ladders on the roof. Whether the ladders were for camouflage or as my mate reckoned, for chasing cat burglars, I don't know.

Surrey have a Transit, in navy blue or black I think, it has a long black drainpipe on roof bars like plumbers use for carrying pipe.

Reminded me of seeing similar in the City, but the coolest was years back (possibly 1990) a fast moving Lancia Delta Integrale with blues/twos near Liverpool Street Station, but the ultimate a nice old Land Rover Defender in the middle of a motorcade with marked motorbike outriders going towards Vauxhall Cross

Were SIS in Vauxhalll Cross by 1990, or still at Century house?

Politicians perhaps?

I covered a Royal arrival once. The convoy rolled to a stop but the Duke wasn't in the Rolls Royce as you'd expect, he was a few cars behind in something quite average - to dodge possible attack no doubt.

Going completely O/T in the other direction I was surprised last week to see a fully marked up Mini Clubman Fire response vehicle going into City Hospital Birmingham on full blues and twos
