To keep a long story short, my old man put a 2014 car up for sale last week for £32,000. Call within 15 mins from a chap putting a deposit down, buying the car for his wife etc etc. Turns up later that day, pays for the car and off he goes - signing the V5 as a private buyer, not a dealer.

I googled the chaps name while the paperwork was being done and he's a dealer - but who cares, he was paying the asking price for cash.

Car turns up on his website today with around 30,000 less miles - 1 owner. Advertised at £10k more than he paid for it.

I'm minded to do nothing about it, the car has gone and we got the price we wanted. But, I feel sorry for the person paying £10k more for a 60,000 mile car that has closer to 100,000 miles on it.

To be clear from the start, after reading a similar thread a while ago - I do not care about the money, or someone making a profit dealing cars. My unease comes from knowing a car is being misrepresented and someone may be about to pay well over the odds for it.

What would pistonheads do? Let it slide or alert the relevant authority?

N.B - It could always just be a mistake on his website and he's listed the wrong mileage but that would make it a VERY expensive high mileage car.

Did you write the mileage on the V5? I'd maybe call up saying you saw it advertised elsewhere with higher mileage and wanted to see if it was the same car/ has a mistake in the ad.

I'll have to ask the old man, he did the paperwork.

As a side point, I don't think it would've been MOT'd as a 2014 car (?) but it was main dealer serviced at around 80,000 miles.

I would say alert the authorities. Mind how would they play the 60,000 miles of past MOT's? Checks are done freely online so why wouldn't anyone check?

No MOT as under 3 years old

as I understand it, clocking used cars before their first MOT is frighteningly common these days.

Just so we are aware what is the car? - got to be something a little specialist for that much of a difference despite being only a few years old

I'd rather not go in to specific details so the car becomes easily searchable.

I did wonder if that was a business strategy. Buy high mileage cars before their first MOT and wind back the miles.

I don't know what has been wiped as can only see the dealers write up, not the actual dash of the car.

The last service was 80k, but the services were regular and would've been in line with the manufacturers guidelines over the last 2/3 years.

Absolutely and totally shop him. Imagine if it was you being mugged off like that buying a car.

Had a motorbike dealer pleading with me to back them up over a cock and bull story regarding a bike they'd bought from me but clocked (ahh my ZXR 750...) - I helped trading standards all the way to nail the rip-off rogues to the wall.

Can you wipe service data as well as alter mileage? You can call up dates and mileages of services plus what was done via the iDrive in mine.

Are you sure it's not just a typo in the ad?

I'd phone as a potential buyer to confirm mileage he's advertising at, possibly a mistake, as if it's been dealer serviced, there's a record of the mileage with them.

If he is trying it on, then TS need to be notified. Surprised you're even asking to be honest.

Suspect that it's quite easily discoverable anyway.

Are you able to go and see the car to see if it's actually been wiped? Or at least find a friend who would be willing to pose as a prospective buyer to do so?

Definitely contact TS about it (Assuming you could make a call or something to establish the advert hasnt been miswritten or something).

Imagine if you were the guy turning up to buy it
