My girlfriend is from the Isle of Man and as she's studying over her she's allowed to drive it in the UK without paying VED or registering it under the temporary import.

People who live in The UK can't drive non-uk registered cars on UK roads. We are going on a long journey and she wanted me to share the driving but I'm unsure as if I can. It has a valid exemption on it but does that stop the moment I'm behind the wheel?

The isle of Mann is part of the uk, so it is a uk registered car.

Er, no.

Although it is a crown dependency, the Isle of Man is not part of the UK.

I'm pretty sure the op knows that, given that his girlfriend is Manx.

something happened at some point where it became 'un-allowed' I had a jersey registered car here 5 years ago, and was even told my girlfriend could take her driving test on it...

You might try looking at the 'temporary importation of a non-EU registered means of transport.
I know the IoM is not part of the EU so Customs Form 308 might work.
It certainly works for cars temporarily imported from the USA and named UK residents can drive them whilst hey are here.
A bit of a long-shot, maybe, but worth a look.

Form 308 is all about Customs Duty and VAT and doesn't help the OP at all because it's not his vehicle.
His g/f is already taking advantage of all the exemptions and reliefs available to her.

As a resident UK national I think he could be in bother if stopped by the police while driving the vehicle.
The chances are probably small but it depends on his appetite for risk - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I530sPVQSc8 - smile

Personally I wouldn't. HMMV.
