I have my driving test coming up soon and i am very confident i will pass...
I have narrowed car choices down to around 3 or 4 models...nothing fancy just run of the mill but it just occurred to me, how can i get insurance to test drive them...as i dont previously hold any insurance which i could drive them on?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You will probably need to get temporary insurance or visit only dealerships rather than private buyers. I can drive other cars on my insurance as long as they're insured by another person but that's not the case with every insurance policy and would be rare to non-existent on policies held by people under 25. What I'm trying to say is you'd need to be insured specifically for the car you're test driving so one of those first 2 options would be about the only way you could drive them.

If you have to buy private, bring someone who knows cars to test drive it you, failing that your options are temp insurance which will be expensive, or buying from a dealer who uses trade plates.

Get the plate of the car you go to look at, take out a policy, cancel it under cooling-off if you don't buy.

I've had this issue with insurance before (in-between cars following a write-off, so had no active policy), however I actually think it's better to be in the passenger seat for a test drive! That way you can focus on listening out for knocks and other noises, can play with all the electronics, ask questions etc.

Many of my test drives have either been with the seller driving, the seller drives one leg of the test* and I drive the car back, or my wife driving!

and end up with cancellation charges of £50+ if you don't read the T&Cs beforehand

Or even end up paying the entire years premium if you crash it
