Why do eBay...

...not just ban people permanently or temporarily for a month for messing sellers about.
I sell on eBay quite a lot, not a business but I've found its generally a good way of getting rid of specialist parts quickly and for a decent price.
Twice this week things have been grinding my gears.
First listed a car part, first time a few people bid against and at the last minute someone bid and won it for a fair price. Three days and no payment or response from messages. So a week later and again someone outbid all the others and again hasn't bothered paying.
Then I sold an item which stated in the listing i'd only accept paypal or cash on collection. The winning bidder paid with a bloody eCheque which can take 10 days to clear. Then the guy sent a message saying he needed the item ASAP and asking if I would make an exception and send it before payment cleared because he needed it for Saturday and as he put it 'It's only 40 quid"
I refuse to send it before I get payment and he got stroppy and said 'ok u can refund then'. I then had to point out that I can't refund him because he sent an eChequ which has not cleared yet.
Bloody frustrating, how anyone makes a living running a business on eBay is beyond me.

Its gone to the dogs.
I sold a car 2 weeks ago, highest bidder wouldn't contact me or reply to numerous emails. I message second highest bidder asking if he still wants the car, his response was "wot car m8" . So I open a case with ebay to cancel the transaction which will refund my final value fee's. I get an email saying they have given the buyer 10 days to agree to the cancellation !!! FFS the reason Ive had to do that is because he wasn't responding in the first bloody place. Best of all is as a seller I cant leave the muppet neg feedback, but he can leave me neg for cancelling the transaction.
In the same week I listed a complete set of ZZR1100 bike fairings for sale, made sure it was perfectly clear it was collection ONLY and no option of me sending them. Guy wins them and sends me a message " hello mate, I'm in Fife 500 miles away so cant collect, can you send them please'
I bloody give up

I've had no issues buying from ebay, even things from US and China.
Had an issue with selling a Chinese panda 1oz gold coin. Had it on a buy it now listing for £500+
Buyer agreed to buy, paid via paypal. Then about 10 minutes before I was going to go out and post it to him I got a message from him to say his ebay and paypal account had been hacked and not to post it.
Followed it up with ebay, and his account had been hijacked. The scammer was probably going to be waiting for it to turn up to his home address while he was at work so they could break in and steal it.
I do wonder what ebay/paypal would have done to sort that out.
I had someone who bought a Fiat Coupe 20v from me, Ebay classified Ad. Told him it had a slight blow out of the front of the engine, and that I thought it could be either warped exhaust headers or a head gasket. He bought it. Saw him ragging it down the M5 a day or two later, I'd estimate he was on the rev limiter in 3rd gear.
Phoned me up a week later to whinge that the head gasket had completely let go. Offered to let me pay his garage bill or return it... told him to FRO. He then threatened me, all 5'4" of him. Scary stuff. Told him he still needed to FRO.

I think eBay is a numbers game, I have about 1300 feedback, probably 15-20 bad transactions, if they all came along at once it would put you right off. There are certain categories that attract chancers / morons as a seller - iPhones, cars, iPads, that sort of thing, ridiculous offers, non paying bidders etc. For making small purchases that you can't be bothered to go out for, like 2x radiator bleed keys for 99p delivered, it can't be beaten!
The simple fact is that e bay don't want these small transactions with people selling odd items they don't need..it's too much hassle. About 3 or 4 years ago they shifted their business model to that of a platform like amazon where major retailers could flog stuff on in a 'factory store' type outlet.
It's a shame really, i used e bay a lot and with the buyers / sellers feedback it allowed you to see who you were dealing with. Once sellers were no longer able to leave feedback it became a fraudsters charter.
My girlfriend sold a brand new handbag which the buyer complained that one of the metal studs on the base was marked but she'd still have it if she got another £50 off. Needless to say the missus told her where to go and told the chiselling little crook to send it back for a refund. The scammer then left negative feedback with no comeback

If you accept a return and they leave negative then eBay will remove the negative. i've been blackmailed by buyers on a few occasions. Things like 'if you don't give me a partial refund of X amount i'll leave negative. A simple copy and paste to eBay usually solves it and they either block them from leaving feedback or remove any left. It's a shame really, i used e bay a lot and with the buyers / sellers feedback it allowed you to see who you were dealing with. What frustrates me is there is absolutely no punishment for repeat offenders.

Seriously? Were you sitting in the back seat watching the gear lever and rev counter to make this "estimation"?
I've read a load of bo||ox on PH, but this is a cracker!

It is still good for selling rare / desirable / large items on collection / pay cash basis as there is no comeback and it exposes you to a far larger audience than gumtree etcIt's a shame really, i used e bay a lot and with the buyers / sellers feedback it allowed you to see who you were dealing with. Sadly the ploy you mentioned is common, many times I have sold an item, only to be emailed to say it has a small fault, mark etc that I missed or is so insignificant. Sold a TV for £80 and buyer said it has a 1.5cm scratch on screen, wants £20 back or cancel sale. doesn't leave much choice as t would cost more to bring it back & resell it. Scum.

It's VERY easy to hear if a car is on the limiter by the way the engine sounds, you'll hear the revs bouncing. From the speed, it's also easy to deduce what gear he may be in. 2nd and he'll barely be pushing 50, 4th and he'll be up over a ton. So if he went past about 80 then its easy to assume he was in 3rd.

You should be on the BMW forum, lots of likeminded souls there.
About 5 years ago I was working in police ops.
Had a call from a business selling beds via ebay, custom made beds.
Sold a bed to customer. Payment received £1000 approx. Bed sent by courier service and delivered ok.
Buyer claimed £200 discount as it was late. No quibble as that was in the terms so company sent cheque. Buyer then complained to ebay that the bed had not arrived. Seller passed on all details of transaction, emails to and from buyer, courier details etc. Clear cut evidence. Ebay then took the mobey back out of the business account, returning £1000 to the buyer! Seller therefore £1200 out of pocket.
Seller said ebay told them it sided with buyers despite the clear evidence of fraud/theft provuded.
Details logged as fraud for pusuing it. Advised caller to pursue ebay re their actions. The buyer was in another atea so cross force actions needed. Unfortunately I retired before I found out the result.
It seems ebay didn't want the hassle of a proper investigation?
I hope the seller got it sorted and the buyers got done.

Ebay managed to find and maintain the right balance between freedom and responsibility that allowed them to grow into and remain one of the worlds largest market places.
Anyone one who thinks they could do a better job should go right ahead, If they can they'll be a billionaire in less than 3 years.

I take it you're on commission then? Anyone one who thinks they could do a better job should go right ahead, If they can they'll be a billionaire in less than 3 years.

Au contraire. It is very difficult indeed to hear the engine sound of another car on 'the motorway' to tell whether it is on the limiter. It's a made up story.

Used Ebay since 2004 as a buyer mainly but maybe a couple of dozen times as a seller. Had one person sell me a car then tell me after I had won it that he'd sold it to someone else, he then left ME negative feedback for calling him a time wasting
and one person sell me a manifold for £20 and not deliver it until I got heavy with him. Thousands of transactions without any major hitches. Most frustrating aspect for me is Chinese sellers listing as being in the UK then taking weeks to deliver but you get good at spotting them. I have a mate who has no end of trouble but the reason is simple, he tries to screw people. Telling them somethings like new when it's not, buying and not paying etc.
All in all it's really useful to be able to find most anything I need and have it on my desk a couple of days later at a decent price.
