Time to Ditch "CPC" After Britains Exit?
Discussion
One of the most pointless EU rules that kills part time driving is the "Certificate of Professional Competence" for driveers of HGVs and PCVs. Can we have it done away with when we leave the EU?
From my experience, much money is wasted sending drivers on the effectively box ticking course which does nothing to assess actual driving standards. I wouldn't object to a multi choice exam (like your theory bit when sitting a test) every 3 years as you can sit it at a time to suit you, not give up valuble time to study in a classroom.
I used to help out a local firm, but when the CPC came in, I wouldn't give up a week of my time to sit in a classroom as my day job pays somewhat better...Hence a huge drop in part time drivers who only help out occesionally.
My vote is do away with CPC but have a "refresher" at your convenience every 3 years.

Companies don't have to do worthless DCPC, there is worthwhile DCPC out there that does address driving standards, it just may be a bit more expensive because of the ratio between drivers/trainer & on road costs.
That isn't the fault of JAUPT etc, it's down to the companies/drivers booking it.
You don't have to do a week in one go either, you can do 1 day a year.

The DCPC could have been excellent for the industry for improving standards if it had been done right. Practical training on stuff like load security and fuel efficient driving, for example. Of course in typical government fashion it's achieved absolutely bugger all and is just another "tax" for us to do our jobs. In all the time I've had my card it's not been asked for even once from any official body. I'm hoping to find a brown envelope arrangement with a shady trainer when it's up for renewal next year as having to spend another 35 hours in a pokey room while some guy talks to me like a little kid telling me how to do the job I've been doing for the past 20 years without any incidents or accidents does not appeal one bit.
Unfortunately I did the course nearly three years ago & knew then what a complete waste of time it was. Thirty Five hours wasted sat in a classroom & nothing learned, after all I'd only been driving buses & wagons for forty plus years.
The biggest piss take is the fact that a candidate can do the same module over & over again, what's the point of that ?
Anyway finished the course on the Friday & went back to work on the following Monday & had a heart attack, never driven since !
