Temporary 30mph signs
Discussion
Does anyone know if the temporary 30 mph speed signs collect data and if they do, if it is available to view?
I'm talking about the black electronic signs that are generally cable tied to a lamppost with a solar panel and are removed a couple of weeks later.
I live in a small village which has a 30 limit although it doesn't seem to apply to anyone, I've seen these signs fitted and removed 3 times in the last 2 years but nothing else happens. Surely if they go to the effort of installing and then removing these things, they should do something with the data if it shows a problem?
Or am I being a tard?

they are not usually put there to collect data - that would normally be cables across the road...
they are usually put there, and moved around as 'shock value' ie something different to catch attention and slow drivers down..
they are not being used to prove a point etc.
On one of the roads I drive on, the local authorities placed the illuminated: 30 mph - SLOW DOWN signs on lamp posts at either ends of the road and left them up for a month as a reminder of the speed limit. they are usually put there, and moved around as 'shock value' ie something different to catch attention and slow drivers down..

Shortly after they were taken down, the Police had a speed camera on the road and were still catching loads of people braking the speed limit (Including a work colleague who was annoyed at being caught at 39mph - Apparently it wasn't fair as the illuminated signs had been taken down! We said: "So you knew it was a 30 limit then?", to which he replied: "Yeah, but they took the signs down!" as though that took the limit away!
) I used to install a lot of the permanent type of these signs, only once did we install a programme that recorded the speeds vehicles were doing as the parish were paying for the signs and specially wanted it. Based on this, I doubt they do record speed.
If you've got a speeding problem the council will probably already be well aware of it (hence the temp signs going up). They just have limited budget and there will be lots of stuff higher up the list, mainly due to the number of accidents. You need someone to die, unfortunately!

It depends upon teh device they are using.I'm talking about the black electronic signs that are generally cable tied to a lamppost with a solar panel and are removed a couple of weeks later.

The speed indicator signs work in 99.9% of the models by a radar speed detector. The majority of the signs simply indicate the speed of an approaching vehicle of flash up a smily or grumpy face. These do inform drivers whether they are above or below the limit and that is as far as the indicators go. After a short while drivers take F-all notice of them.
With the advant of cheap electronics and computing components it is becoming more common for these devices to have traffic counters within them. These typically store, time, date, speed, direction and sometimes classification of the passing vehicles. The devices with traffic counters are much more useful because they will provide data on the performance of the speed indicator, although I could provide that graph before they install it, and that information can be used to inform police and highways authorities about what treatment woudl be suitable for the road.
You never know, the one that was placed in your road may have had a traffic counter in it.

Thanks for the info, signs don't have the smiley/grumpy face, just flash up speed when it is being exceeded (most of the time)
Unfortunately village it at the end of a nice long straight which goes 50, 40, 30, so I can understand why people speed through
If they had used a survey version of a speed indicator device then they would have information that they can act upon.Unfortunately village it at the end of a nice long straight which goes 50, 40, 30, so I can understand why people speed through
