Probably a quick one, anyone know the answer to this? Might justify some of my risque parking manoeuvres.

I'm assuming you're talking about parking bays? Depends on the whim of the traffic warden and differing councils/boroughs take their own stance on it.

From my observations, overall length matters.

It would appear to be wheelbase in Edinburgh based on never having got a ticket for it in 13 years of living in the city. And Edinburgh wardens will book you at every possible opportunity!

I was more thinking about double yellows/Keep clear bays. Was parked a couple of times this week with my wheels off the line but the arse of my vehicle hanging about ~30cm over a double yellow

Depends what side of the bed the traffic warden got out of I guess. Some of the council owned car parks near me have signs stating that cars must be parked wholly within a bay. Not sure how the owners of those oversize pickup trucks get on with that!

Think about the purpose of those bays, and the answer should be obvious - if you intrude into the space which is intended to be clear for whatever reason, be aware you may get ticketed.

Or not, as others say - this is going to come down to the traffic warden's discretion in practise.

I picked a TV up from a flat in London in a transit connect, because I knew I had to get the tv in through the back doors I parked right at the front of the box

According to the traffic wardens that 1" over the white line mattered , didn't get a ticket but if I'd come back 5 minutes later I would have.

Some years ago in Munich the tram I was on passed a BMW which was overhanging a track side parking bay by a couple of inches and the BMW got a whole corner ripped off. That's German precision for you.

I got a ticket in Rochdale centre years ago. My wheels were inside the markings, but the nice policeman said my boot was overhanging.

Having said that, it was the last space before a pedestrian crossing, so he could have had a point. I can't remember the actual details of the offence, but it wasn't parking. Obstruction or something.
