Community speed watchers can be completely ignored, so why are you worried?

Cheers, yeah I'm not worried just a bit annoyed really!
I'd have forgotten it in the time it takes for the letter to hit the bin.

Sporty car that the local nimbys don't approve of, yeah id just blank the letter. They don't mean anything, all it really means is that if the area you passed frequently does have speeders then there may or may not be a proper speed trap there in the near future.

We had a similar problem locally becaue a few of them didn't like bikes so wrote out to every single biker who commuted through the town.

Does the title of "community speed watcher" allow one to access the car registration database and obtain names and addresses?

Or do they simply forward all their gripes to the local police who act on their behalf?

The letter the Mrs got when I'd ignored the Community Speed Watch in her car, was issued in the name of a police traffic sergeant. I had a chat with the guys running a local CSW and they said they just took the reg numbers of anyone doing >40mph (they were in a 30mph zone) as the police sent the letters out.

I'm not sure what's worse. Is it the csw beards... Or the PH massive who get seized by some intense self righteous wk-fest of indignation at the thought that some people want them to drive more slowly?

I lied, I'm completely sure.

And as for posters who know nothing about csw and post in here. It's like that spoof customer service vid where they tell the customer to pack up the PC and send it back because they are too fking stupid to own a PC...

Off to take my tablets now... Nurse!

By the way op. What is the average noise level for cars of the same model as yours?

I'm not sure what's worse, sanctimonious tossers or sanctimonious tossers. I lied, I'm completely sure.

My car is lowered and has a sports exhaust (It is slightly louder than average) do you think they just presume because being young and the type of car you drive is enough for them to go, 'hey yep, he was speeding lets make that 27 a 37 matey'?!
It's a sop to keep campaigners happy. If they make enough song and dance the police may arrange for an officer to do it properly.

Nothing go do with the age of the driver. They simply equate noise volume with speed. I have had two encounters with these vigilante squads.

The first time I had already clocked them from a distance. So I dropped a gear and slowed to 25mph to see what would happen. Sure enough 'Doris' duly raised the gun and aimed it in my general direction. She looked mightily miffed when she realised I wasn't actually about to mow her down. As I drew near I could see her muttering something to her fellow old biddy clipboard scribbler. Never heard anything more about it. I went through the same village on a later date and this time BiB were doing the honours. So I repeated what I did previously. It was patently obvious that I was nowhere near the limit. The copper was quite capable of forming a prior opinion of my speed and didn't even bother pointing the gun at me. So I gave him the 'Malham wave' and I got a smile in return.

The second time, at a different place, I was a passenger in a friends car when the assembled bunch got all excited as we hove into view round a corner. I thought the old duffer with the gun was going to wet himself. My friend (who is in his late 50s btw) was doing just under 30 in second gear. In his TVR. We both gave them a cheery wave. It was worth it to watch the sour face of the furiously scribbling harridan next to him. My friend subsequently received a letter which he framed and hung on the wall in his study alongside his collection of motoring memorabilia.

I would like to know what the selection process is for picking the locals who use the speed measuring equipment and exactly what training they undergo. Typical example below.

My bet is that most of those that are 'caught' are also locals. It can cause some ill feeling. I heard a story (no idea whether it was true) that in one village the (male) gun toter was unwise enough to confront someone later down at the pub. Fisticuffs were exchanged. The landlord promptly threw them both out and banned them.

There was one documented case, in Cambridgeshire IIRC, where the main protagonist was passing on details of ~1500 vehicles per month. The cops couldn't handle the paperwork and asked him to curb his enthusiasm. He declined so they gave him his marching orders.

A rural councillor told me his council was running a community scheme.

He is absolutely convinced that an NIP will be issued, on information from the civilians, if the police have previously written letters on one or two occasions to the same vehicle keeper.

I was unable to put him right about this. I fear he's going to be badly let down. Which is nice..smile

How many degrees do you need to understand they're a sad bunch with nothing better to do?

First I've heard of this Community Speed Watch.

I feel even more depressed about the state of the world than I did before.

And I'm the kind of guy that sticks to 30 even at 4am. (In a 30 limit zone of course smile )

They're inevitably the same set of people who drive at 40mph through an NSL and then the 30mph zone.

I don't like to jump to conclusions can stereotype people..............but in the case of CSW I'll break that rule. Quite simply every one I ever had the misfortune to meet is a joyless, car hating NIMBY fkwits with far too much time on their hands.
To illustrate how fking stupid these cretins are, a local group to me set up a watch, but instead of having set up to monitor cars coming from an NSL to the village, they recorded people leaving the village and accelerating towards the NSL!

That was in the village where I live and it is absolutely correct. The guy, name of McCandless I think, became paranoid and was requiring the Old Bill to send out warnings to all drivers doing 33 mph and over. They told him that each letter took time plus postage and that they had a limit. He had a 'hissy fit' and withdrew from the scheme taking his buddies with him. Result - peace and quiet have returned.

I'm not sure it demonstrates how stupid they are, after all they're still checking the speed in the 30 limit in the village. The NSL only applies after the sign, not before it, so there's no "accelerating towards the NSL".

There's a stretch near me in a 30 which now goes into a 50 (used to be NSL). By far the majority of drivers in front of me accelerate off at a fair old lick towards the 50 limit well before the 30 ends and past an obscured junction and the exit for a housing estate. I always catch them up a few hundred yards into the 50 as few of them ever make it to that limit.
