Speed Camera Vans - Seatbelt enforcement
Discussion
1) Can speed camera vans enforce seat belt offences?
2) Is it likely that they actually will, or is their main focus speed?
3) Does the 2 week NIP rule apply to seatbelt offences etc?
It seems quite hard to see through the front windscreen on modern cars (e.g. L494 Range Rover Sport...) but who knows.

I've read about them doing so, and more.
There was a case here years ago where a van driver went passed one giving it the bird with both hands, so non on the wheel at the moment the picture was taken.
If they can't see you, then they can't "do" you, a bit like when you speed on a road they're not.

I can understand why the officer was annoyed at someone swearing at him. I mean I don't support the idea of speed camera vans, but I can understand why he went through that extra effort to do him for - I presume - careless driving? There was a case here years ago where a van driver went passed one giving it the bird with both hands, so non on the wheel at the moment the picture was taken.

What I wanted to know is that, on a routine day, do speed camera van officers check for multiple things or is it simply a case of just reading speed, move onto the next car and check speed, move onto the next car and check speed, etc.

Seat belts would be quite hard to make out (especially in winter) but it's odd they aren't checking for phones considering the pr drive they are currently running about the increase in points/fine attached to using one.
Yeah you're right. I suppose they'd have to look inside the car to check for phone usage.Edited by sonnenschein3000 on Thursday 15th December 15:30

2) Yes & Yes
3) No for seatbelt and who can say for "etc".
For overcoming glare on windscreens a polarising filter is used.

Who genuinely doesn't wear a seatbelt thought. I once went to move my car a mere 20m down a private road and subconsciously put my seatbelt on.
i dont, why should i, i am aware of the risk and i choose not to, my choice impacts no one else no different to smoking in my book

What if you are in the back? Or passenger side? Remember that you are a XX kg mass that if stopped suddenly is prone to carry on and damage yourself and potentially others.no different to smoking in my book
And/or a lifetime of high dependency care paid by the tax payer. etc. Daily Mail rant, etc.
On a separate point today I passed a parked up van marked up as Police with the speed camera icons on both rear doors as it was getting dark. What made this notable was that there was a 20-odd feet pole exiting the middle of the roof with what looked like a pair of cameras mounted at the top. In addition the road in question (a 60 NSL, unsurprisingly) has a mild curve in it that would have prevented drivers more than 200metres away seeing the van, but the cameras on the pole would be able to see vehicles approaching far earlier than this.
Is this their latest desperate attempt to bump up convictions or something else entirely?
