TrafPol stop - checking tyres outside Harrods
Discussion
Last evening: R8 spider stopped outside Harrods - BiB was checking his rear tyre tread depth. Think he passed.
Might be worth checking yours (me too) as this something we tend to ignore until the MOT tester tells us "It failed Sir, needs new rubber".

Wow. Don't include me in that royal 'we'. If you never bother checking tread depth between MOTs, how often do you bother to check pressures?Might be worth checking yours (me too) as this something we tend to ignore until the MOT tester tells us "It failed Sir, needs new rubber".

Perhaps, if you're particularly feckless. If you're not a complete idiot then you should be able to check your tread depth once every couple of weeks when you're doing your tyre pressures.AMG Merc said:
Still, my guess is the amount of drivers who don't check their tread depth is a lot higher than one might expect.
Oh, I dunno about that. They're the kind of people who complain that it's SOOOOO unfair the MOT man's knocked 'em back because a couple of tyres are showing cords.Check mine fully weekly to make sure there's nothing stuck in them, nail, glass, etc. Daily walk around when first using car, takes 2 minutes.
Had a colleague who left and returned his Audi A6. Tyres where shot. Below minimum and according to the garage where we got cars serviced, had metal showing on the inner part of ALL 4 TYRES!!! How the f*ck he drove in the winter I don't know!! Car was parked up awaiting replacements and got nicked overnight! Hope the scrotes where caught and done for car theft and 4 bald tyres but I never found out!!

The stupidity and ignorance of the general non-PH population about tyres and brakes never ceases to amaze me. I personally stick to the old adage of never skimping on tyres and brakes. I start getting uncomfortable at 2.5-3 mm tread depth and change between 2-2.5. Same with the bike. The winters get changed at 4.5-5. I know I'm over cautious but it gives me piece of mind. We have frinds who run a tyre fitters and I'm often horrified when I see the condition of some of the tyres being takes off cars.

To those above who say most do. Take a straw poll in your workplace tomorrow. You may be surprised.
No-one in my workplace had any idea until a few months ago, when I told them, that there are wear bumps between the treads to let you know when it's time to change. And now they do, I'd not be at all surprised if (a) they've all forgotten and (b) none of them have checked again since. However, those are not people who spend time on a car forum...
...as you suggested in your original post "we" (which reads as "people on here") don't check our tyres, you've got a self-selected set of people who do give a s
t about cars and driving and lots of "speak for yourself"s

- looks like Clarkson has been at it - and supports my earlier coments that many (ok, so what's many?) people do not check their tyre treads.
