M1 Speed Camera/Hadecs

Hello all,

Apologies if this has already been asked - Just wondering anyone knows if the cameras on the M1 (especially anything between J20-J40) are active? I'm referring to the new Hadecs cameras or those on the 'Smart' motorway.

Apparently those near the gantries with reduced speeds displayed overhead are active. When there is no speed displayed I've passed through them over 70 and never had anything through.

Not quite sure about those new Hadecs cameras though, specifically those near J38-40 and possibly before. Again, passed through over 70 when there are no reduced speeds indicated and never had any notice through the post.

Anyone have the lowdown on cameras? Or ever had a speeding notice through the post?

Its a stretch of road I cover every now and again.... due to a trip up to the in laws Also glad to see fewer roadworks/50 zones now!

The HADECS are active and I've seen them flash people at speed that did not look way over 70. I always make sure I'm at the speed limit going past them.

HADECS2 above each lane don't work/have been turned off from my observations. Safely fly past those at any speed you want and nothing will happen (M1/M62 W Yorks). HADECS3 installations are definitely live and enforce reduced limits on the same stretches. Not aware of anyone being done for going past them at 70+ when no reduced limit set in my patch, but they do enforce NSL on the M4 around Bristol, so they are capable of doing so. I keep it under 80 past the HADECS3 ones personally because I'm not sure what the dealio is with them yet. HADECS2 ones I just keep my toe down and never had one flash me even at very licence breaking speeds.

As I understand it Hadecs are linked to the variable speed limits only (currently).

On the M1 they are definitely operating when reduced speed limits are displayed. I've seen plenty of cars flashed at night in these circumstances (with my cruise control set to 64mph / 53mph etc using sat nav speeds & cars going past travelling faster)

When no reduced speed limits are shown I have not seen anything flashed, & have driven through them myself at over 80mph (again using sat nav speeds) Perhaps I've just been lucky?

Thanks for the replies chaps. When there are no reduced limits displayed, I've had people shoot past who seem to be doing easily around 90+ and didn't notice any flashes. But as mentioned above, I've stuck to around 80ish and so far have been safe.

Whereabouts are the Hadecs 3 cameras installed?

They flashed earlier (at around J10, M1) with a 60 limit displayed. The cars around me can't have been doing much more than 70.

I've seen the ones between Chesterfield and the M18 flash plenty of times when there's been no temporary speed limit

That being said though, the cars that have triggered them have did seem to be going properly fast.

Those on the M1 in Notts/Derbys are now painted yellow.

The smart motorway sections around the M4/M5 Bristol and M25 Kent are always on with zero tolerance over 70mph - been a lot of coverage in the press about it. It must be at the discretion of the responsible constabulary rather than blanket Policy.

I just do 70mph through them when no reduced limit. Takes the guess work out and no NIP in the post.

This is exactly my experience, in Derbs/South Yorks on the M1.

I set the CC at 80.

I go through loads of these every week at 78 gps never not triggered one yet.

Used to go through at 85 gps until i heard about the M4/M5 ones.

I went through the southbound section of the M1 from M6 in December.

I originally thought the yellow camera's were a replacement for the overhead gantry cameras that only work (in my experience) when there is a noted speed limit.

Anyway, I got flashed going passed a yellow camera, on the second gantry I passed, slowing down from high double digits and it flashed. A week later a got a nice letter to advise I had been noted as speeding, but as these were new I was not being prosecuted and the letter was to inform me of these new cameras

So for me it seems these new cameras are always active and i suspect will catch a lot of people over the coming months, and also cause no end of speeding / braking between each gantry

I had the same letter, same area
however, I've not seen the cameras flash recently
(not from me, but others that are travelling 85 upwards (at a guess)
