This bothers me much less than people parked on the wrong side of the road with headlights on.

This actually bothers me because it's clearly intentional and they are getting out of a ticket this way. This bothers me much less than people parked on the wrong side of the road with headlights on.

Most of the time I don't think it's intentional, it's just that people can't be bothered to clean their car, especially in winter. And they're too much of a numpty to consider giving the number plate and lights a bit of a wipe.
While that's absolutely true, manufacturers have to take some blame. It really wouldn't be hard to work the aerodynamics to keep the plate and lights from hoovering quite so much spray up quite so quickly. Many manage it, some are terrible.TooMany2cvs said:

I got pulled on the M42, probably about 10yrs ago, due to the state of the number plate..... In my defence I had a 5hr daily commute from Chipping Norton to Kingswinford which was 90% back roads and the car was filthy 90% of the time.... The officers first comment was that the filthy number plate was on purpose and the sole reason that I had not cleaned it was to evade speed cameras. That's probably when I failed the attitude test and got a £30 ticket (no points!). I was then asked to clean the rear number plate on the hard shoulder of the motorway with my back to the oncoming traffic whilst they looked on....
Now, if the officers just asked me too ensure it was cleaned, let me clean it safely and then let me carry on, i'd be happy, even with a ticket! But, to be immediately accused of dodging speed camera's, that it was pre-meditated, and forced to clean it in one of the most dangerous places on the roads, then there is only one word for them........
Either way, learn't my lesson, number plate is now cleaned (if not the rest of the car!!)

I bet it never occurs to some people to look at the back of their cars. Sheepshanks said:

I bet it never occurs to some people to look at the back of their cars. Just before Christmas I went around the work car park and more than half the cars (20ish) had dirty lights, very low tread and in one case an almost flat tyre.
Spoke to the owners who work here and it transpires that half of them have no idea how to top up their screen wash, let alone that they need to clean the lights every few days this time of year or that they need to check the tread on their tyres every month or so, not when the MOT bloke says it's failed...
Good result though as a lot of happy people after i had cleaned their lights for them and now I have been asked in the Spring, when it is light after work, if i can do a 5pm 'Basic Car Maintenance' session with them to show them how to check washer fluid, tyre pressures/depth and all the other little things that you need to keep an eye on.
Also had to tell the office junior that you don't top up the oil only when the red light comes on as by that time it is usually too late...

My son-in-law turned up in his car (which was my wife's old car) over Christmas and hadn't noticed the (now rusting) scuff on the near-side. "I never go round that side" he said.Just before Christmas I went around the work car park and more than half the cars (20ish) had dirty lights, very low tread and in one case an almost flat tyre.
I did point out that if he parked it facing the right way it would help.

That's a bloody good result.TurboHatchback said:
Yes it's illegal but who's going to do anything about it? There are basically no traffic police any more and those that are left have the their hands full dealing with more serious stuff, all enforcement is done by cameras nowadays which is no good if they can't read your plate.
I saw someone who had been tugged yesterday on the A38 as I was heading out of Bristol. Hard to tell exactly what was going on, but the copper and he were looking intently at the very dirty back end of his car at about numberplate height...I really could not care less about my own or anyone else having a dirty number plate. I have cleaned the lights and ignored the plates myself. Never had any trouble.......my 120d hoovers every scrap of crud off the road and applies it to the plate.... Never drive the M3 in winter so not sure how it would look.
