Hi guys
A friend of mine said she had received a letter in the post regards her car being untaxed and obvously a letter too plead guilty or not guilty.
Obviously she is guilty (dooh) / anybody know what the likely fine is too be ?
When looked up when the tax had expired I was shocked as per the tittle!

Thanks for anybodies input.

The poor girl is a young nurse doing end of care life nursing so is a little upset too say the least.

Thanks

All the unpaid tax plus a minimum 80 quid fine.

I would imagine a fine of a couple hundred.

I did something similar a few years ago and just said sorry. I now open all my wife's post that looks like it comes from DVLA.

June 2014, that's some going. Time to open the wallet, it's going to sting.

How on earth does someone forget to tax a car for two and a half years !

Imagine if we all did that.......

I think you'd be surprised (or not). Imagine if you had to tax your washing machine every year - I don't think it would be on the top of my head "oh, I must remember to tax that machine" - to some a car is just a white good that's expensive to run.

Probably a daft question but what's the MOT status?

Back payment of all the lost VED, for starters.

ISTR the maximum fine = £1,000 or 5 times the annual rate of duty, whichever is the greater.

If she's lucky, it'll be somewhere between 1 and 2 week's net income (less 1/3 for an early guilty plea), with the Victim Surcharge (10%) and prosecution costs (£85?) to add to that.

Seems odd that they waited two and a half years to send the first letter ?

Almost like she's only just registered herself as the keeper. Or has changed the V5 address with has the car having been registered for years at an address where she hasn't been living. Maybe more to this than meets the eye ?

Thanks for everyone's input, ironically just mot checked car and all is good there till August. I recon as she moved recently may have been picked up on it.

Don't know if should point her in the direction of this post or not or let it be a horrible surprise for her. Not ideal

Cheers chaps

This is really serious.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but it's the Comfy Chair for your young friend.

Surely if just pleads guilty won't they just fine her without it going to court ?

and a fine.

Im not sure how she managed to forget it for 4 months before the new system came in? Thought it was Oct 2014 when the paper system was removed, so she ignored it for 4 months and then just didnt do anything until caught.

Is there something she/you are not telling us?

I would have thought its a £1000 fine, all back dated tax and court costs... no points are awarded for driving without tax.

Supposed its the cleanest car crime as its just a fine and not sure I remember ever telling an insurance company about a tax offence.

If you saw in the papers that tax discs had been abolished and saw the car as little more than a machine, surely it's not too hard to slip your mind? But then again, I tend to keep track of bills I have to pay and what I owe people so maybe it's not that easy.

Nope not hiding anything, just literally a young girl who at this point had a young baby and was still trying too do the right thing and work too as a nurse,
All completely genuine or I wouldn't have come on here for the sake of someone else if something else in it.
Just a straight untaxed car fine, her fault for being blonde i guess smile

I'm surprised they haven't already taken action (ie court) against her at her old address - is she sure they haven't? I understand they start issuing penalties after a month.
