Say for instance some one decided to copy everything on the Pistonheads forum and host it them selves.

Does the data the is being copied belong to the person who contributed it or does it belong to Pisonheads?

Unless PH have something in their Ts&Cs that specifically states the original poster retains ownership of any content posted, PH own the words you write here.

EDIT: I should add that such a clause would be highly unlikely. Most forums own all content posted.

There is also the 'code' of the website which is definitely owned by the website, PH in this example.

http://www.haymarket.com/terms-and-conditions

Seems very clear on this question, both in the Copyright section, and the specific paragraphs following.

Just seen this, but because it is written down does not make it legal.

If i do some work for my employer then my work belongs to them... because i am under a contract.

Am i under contract here?

What about google indexing this site? If the data was copied from google... then what ?

There is your contract. If ParkingEye can enforce a contract based on signs, then this seems likely to be enforceable too.

Usually the copyright belongs to the forum/its owner, as they are the person publishing it.

This is usually in the T&C that everyone agrees to without actually reading them.
