I'm currently using a Road Angel which works well enough. I'm getting ready to change my car and thinking that an app for my IPhone could be the way to go party because I would love to not have the RA hardware on the dashboard.

I tried CamerAlert but can't live with the constant warnings of cameras/traps that are no longer there. Has anybody tried Cyclops? It seems to be highly recommended and apparently work through the Apple CarPlay system.

I'm also not clear as to whether Cyclops works on gps or 3/4g which would be data hungry.

Any help would be appreciated.

Surely these aren't detectors but 'notifiers'? i.e. they cannot detect anything, only tell you when you're near something in a database.

Indeed. The laser "detectors" only tell you when you've been "pinged" too by which time it's too late rolleyes

That's why I said speed camera rather than radar detector. They 'detect' that I'm approaching a speed camera/ trap and alert me which is useful, no?

Just a play on words really.

Waze is a well regarded navigation app that alerts about cameras, users also tell it when they've seen a police car parked up, car stopped on the hard shoulder, debris in the road etc and it'll alert you to those too.

There are lots of speed camera apps available - never sure how up to date some of them are. You could use TomTom. I have found Waze generally quite useful but depends if you are in an area where there are enough other users

I'm in the same boat as the OP and have used a Road Angel for about 15 years now. Its a useful back up especially in unfamiliar areas.

I tried waze but it seems there are no audio alerts - only on the map which I might glance at but its the audio alerts I want. Is there a setting to alter this?

Similarly, I would be interested to know if cyclops on the phone etc is good and gps based for data allowance reasons.

I do want to get a new dashcam too as I left the last one in the car I sold so this caught my eye as a combination https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01HOMH8VK/ref=wl_it_d...

Unfortunately, only if you are exceeding the limit. Never understood that as if you are just about to overtake a car, you would get caught as it would be difficult to adjust your speed in the middle of an overtake (assuming you are over).

This^ is your closest bet for mobile vans etc, as well as the standard fitted one which are saved within. Rarely have I gone past anything on the motorways and not been notified of it. Police especially!

Cyclops is excellent on the iPhone.

Use it in my classic, primarily for an accurate speedo. That said, the database is excellent and matches our road angels fitted to the two dailies well enough smile

Thanks, I will download the Cyclops app and give it a try in my current car. Hopefully I can get audible alerts via Bluetooth. If it works I can include Apple CarPlay as an option when I order my new car.

Just to revisit this, did Cyclops work ok with CarPlay?

No.

Funnily enough I was thinking of giving this another look rather than pay another £100 subscription to RoadAngel next month. It won’t work with CarPlay as there are only a few apps within CarPlay BUT it should work via Bluetooth while using CarPlay for music.

I’m giving it another try.

I just tried the Cyclops app again. I was playing music in the car with my phone connected by Bluetooth. The app looked fine on the iPhone but the alerts through the car were just a few farting noises to interrupt the music, there was also a very brief warning on the dashboard.

All in all, not encouraging.

Now contemplating the Cheetah as a standalone.

Road Angel is going on ebay. Tried a Fusion Aguri combined detector/camera but think I am going for two standalones.

There must be a decent solution out there!
